PhillyKev 0 #5 February 25, 2004 Yeah...I know...but that one just makes your computer beep for a couple hours. This one deletes your files.
Ron 10 #6 February 25, 2004 already got me. Destroyed 2 yeras of files...So bad my work computer will not even run. I have to send it to my tech guys in Memphis. The virus was replication itself so fast that my virus scan could not delete it fast enough...I t was a race,a nd the virus scan was loosing...My tech guys told me to just unplug the thing and send it to them, and that they had not heard of it moving like that before... It also WROTE to my A and D drives. It was scanned before I opened it. And before people start telling me not to open things from folks I don't know.... I needed a password to a new system at work...So I emailed the person asking for a password...I got an Email back in like 5 min from that person with the subject "Password Approved", and the only text was "OK"....It was a wierd attachment so I ran a virus scan on it...and it came back clean. As soon as I opened it...I knew I was screwed...It started deleting my files right infront of me. I had just updated my system. I wonder if it was that new one....The tech guys said they have never heard of something like that...Of course they were laughing at me as I told them. Oh yeah, the disk in my drive was my backup disk.....I was told not to use it...So two years of work is gone....Unless the tech guys give me an ok to use that disk after they look at it. baa75 0 #7 February 26, 2004 I had the NetSky virus sent to me at work today. I just forwarded it to an IT guy for him to play with. He thought it was kinda funny that I would be the first one (of quite a few people today) to get sent a virus called NetSKY! BettyAnn Getting married? Check out my website! meridianjumper 0 #8 February 26, 2004 I am a computer tech for a company here in Meridian, MS. I have seen one bad case of Mydoom.f so far in my shop. It had gone in and deleted files in the "My Documents" folder. From all my research on this virus, it cannot be repaired without causing damage to the files that it infects. I really hate to tell clients that they lost files due to something like that. It makes me feel like a doctor going up to the next of kin and saying, "I am truely sorry, but we lost them." Only because I am user also is why I feel that way. I treat peoples data like it is very important. Unlike the way Dell does to fix a problem. I love it when I hear walk-ins bring in their computers and say, "The guy at Dell said to put the System Restore Disk in the CD drive and follow the directions and that will take care of all your problems." GEEZ!! Come on! Anywho, it is very important to back up your data to something that is not attached to your computer, like a CD or ZIP drive. Heck, if you still use them, 3.5" disks work too. Just learn from the people who have lost all their data and do not have a backup when they need it most. Just a few mins of your time once a week and you will not have to lose sleep over lost data. Just my two cents. Be careful out there guys! Blue Skies, Jeremy

PhreeZone 20 #10 February 26, 2004 Actually, depending on the situation you could recover the data by using some good recovery tools. I've had to do similar this week. Out of a 7500 node network only 5 users were infected and I was able to restore probally 80% of the data with an assortment of recovery tools. Just since a file is deleted does'nt mean its really gone until something gets wrote over its spot on the drive.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
PhillyKev 0 #11 February 26, 2004 Read up on the virus....it corrupts the files first, than deletes them....even if you recover them you got nada.
skybrat68 0 #12 February 26, 2004 The guy at Dell said to put the System Restore Disk in the CD drive and follow the directions and that will take care of all your problems." *** ????? I just got a Dell 2 weeks ago and the Win32 virus was found in 2 files and every time I ran the McAfee virus scan, it found 10-20 "potentially unwanted programs". It turned out that the computer was full of spyware and needed to be wiped clean and rebuilt. This guy walked me thru taking everything out and stayed on the phone with me and went step by step on how to reinstall Window XP operating system. We got to a point that popped up a side window stating it was going to take 39 min to finish the installation and he said a different tech would call back in 30 min to an hour to help reinstall the software that had been included, and they did just that. It took literally ALL DAY (since I am not a computer tech) and I felt very nervous when my brand new computer of 2 weeks was sitting there with nothing on it before we started the reinstallation process and Dell was very reassurring and overall very, very helpful. hookitt 1 #14 February 26, 2004 QuoteIt turned out that the computer was full of spyware and needed to be wiped clean and rebuilt. For future referrence, spyware is easily eliminated. Download Spybot and ad-aware. Run them every couple weeks to remove the inevitable spyware. Be sure to update the program prior to each use. Unless the system is working poorly, it should not be neccessary to re-install.My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry...
