jerry81 10 #4 February 29, 2004 Quotehave u considered kite surfing?, looks like a lot more fun than windfurfing if u ask me I'll agree with that. Windsurfing can be a bore if the wind's not strong enough. With kitesurfing, if you have enough wind to get the kite in the air, you have enough wind to go fast. Otoh, you can always lift the sail on a surfboard, while dropping the kite in the water might leave you stranded among the gators. And that kitesurfing board is not much of a flotation device, either, so a boat crew is a must when you're kiting. As for sites- just throw 'windsurfing' or 'kitesurfing into Google and browse through the results. I'm sure you'll find lots of useful stuff.
adamsr 0 #5 February 29, 2004 I don't know of any real dz.com style sites for windsurfing, but i'd really reccomend it, i've been windsurfing for a couple of years now and it's really good fun. ties in well with skydiving as well, coz when the weather's crap for skydiving it's generally good for windsurfing. Basically i'd reccomend going for some lessons before you dive in and buy your own kit, basically it'll be much easier and more enjoyable than trying to teach yourself, plus if you buy kit now you'll out grow your first board and want something smaller in just a few months, so a waste of money!! yoink 321 #6 February 29, 2004 Windsurfing is fantastic fun... I did it for about 9 years till an injury kept me out of it (just before a comp I might add. ) As far as getting your own rig goes - get a load of time on rental gear first. If you're looking at doing mainly inshore sailing, the best fun is with very large sails and small boards - however, the same as with skydiving, these are best progressed to gradually. If you really want to buy your own gear soon, make sure you have a board that has enough flotation that you can stand on it without sinking at zero speed. You won't be going very fast at the start. Don't go for one with foot straps all over it; they'll just get in the way as you're learning and won't be of any use to you until you hit high wind conditions. As for sails, it really depends on the average wind conditions in your area, but in general, something like a 5.7sq meter sail is generally a good starter. Find either a school or experienced sailer in your area: they'll be able to advise you a lot more specifically. Fraid I don't know any sites... Hope this is helpful - if you want any more advice, feel free to PM me. Will

yoink 321 #8 February 29, 2004 I don't know a lot about US geography, but if possible, sail on the sea.... it's SO much more fun! The chop makes it a lot more interesting, although there are inherent hazzards - being blown off shore and never being seen again is probably one of the major ones Chop jumping is relatively easy and great fun. Stumpy 284 #9 February 29, 2004 Hey there, I have windsurfed for about 10 years and now teach kitesurfing - kitesurfing is much easier to get to a decent level at. (I also think its a lot more fun becaus it is easy to play in 3 dimensions rather than just 2) If you want to know anything about kitesurfing drop me a PM and I'll do my best to help out.
