JohnRich 4 #79 February 12, 2004 QuoteQuoteI don't think John Rich's comments in any way insinuated that Texas was the cause of the Civil War or a major contributor to the Civil War. Sorry then. I misunderstood what he meant. No problem, I admit it wasn't worded as well as it could have been. I mentioned that Texas was unique in that it specified the right to secede in it's Constitution when adopted into the Union. And that secession was the issue which started the Civil War. But I didn't mean to imply that Texas played a crucial role in the start of the Civil War.
JohnRich 4 #80 February 12, 2004 QuoteI believe what he meant was that the Civil War was fought because the other states tried to secede without the legal right to do so. I'm pretty sure he wasn't claiming that the Civil War was fought over a clause in the Texas constitution. Bingo! Thank you for clarifying that for me. Since you explain things so well, maybe I should just hire you as my speech-writer!
JohnRich 4 #81 February 12, 2004 QuoteGive it back to Mexico. Well, if you're going to give back all former lands belonging to Mexico, that covers the entire south-west U.S., including Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, and Colorado. Santa Anna should have stayed home, instead of trying to take-back the land which he had previously given to Anglo settlers.
JohnRich 4 #82 February 12, 2004 QuoteThe truth is, the Alamo defenders had numerous opportunities to escape. There were wide gaps in the Mexican lines and plenty of natural terrain to use for cover, if they wanted to make it to safety. Instead they chose to stay and fight. Strategically speaking, they didn't accomplish anything by staying and dying, but it did make a nice battle cry for the battle of San Jacinto. I agree with the first part, and disagree with the second part. Yes, they did have the opportunity to escape. Both before the Mexican Army arrived, and even during the seige. Bonham was made famous by riding off on horseback, sneaking through Mexican lines, in order to get word out to Sam Houston to send reinforcements. And then upon receiving Houston's reply that he could spare none, instead of remaining with Houston, Bonham rode back to the Alamo to deliver the bad news. And Bonham died there during the fight. As for the strategy, it is said that the Alamo bought Houston the time he needed to gather all the forces he could, to make a final stand. While he was still outnumbered by the Mexicans at San Jacinto (now Houston), he achieved surprise and won the battle. The delay caused by the Alamo may have helped in that regard. Damn, I was so thinking this 20 posts ago, but, oh well, unfortunately I'm against invading oil rich countries. Texas better stay where it's at I suppose. Never go to a DZ strip show. Andrewwhyte 1 #88 February 12, 2004 Seriously though: In Canada we have dealt with secessionist governments in Quebec on and off for twenty five years. No credible person ever suggested that they would not be allowed to go if they decided to in a referendum. The nuts and bolts of such a split were very onerous when considered. How much military hardware do they get? How about pensions? How about the national debt? What about NATO, NORAD? NAFTA? In your case what happens when the president needs support from the senior senator from Montana who wants a 37% tariff on Texas beef? While there is no good reason (military procurement) why Texas could not or should (Longhorns, Aggies, etc. kicked out of the NCAA) not be (NASA moves to Orlando) its own country, the benefits of being American are not inconsiderable. benny 0 #89 February 12, 2004 I don't have an f$#%ing clue where Halliburton is nor do I care, but you guys have OIL, so if you secede, we'll invade, but then make you a protectorate or something along those lines, not give you the rights of a state which you clearly don't deserve. Silly slow man Never go to a DZ strip show.
AggieDave 6 #90 February 12, 2004 Texas doesn't really have that much oil anymore, thats why the state's property tax is so high, since oil taxes funded the school system forever. When it ran dry (basically), they used property taxes to cover it... Well, that's the super simple nutshell version of Texas economic history.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
