Police Ticket-Writing Contest

Recommended Posts

Paraphrased from the news:

Two cops from a small Georgia town had a contest between themselves to see who could write the most tickets in a month. A judge overheard the winner bragging, and ordered them to stop the contest. The mayor added: "It is not anything that we as a city support." The officers have been asked to resign.

What a concept: firing police officers for doing their jobs too well... And a judge and a mayor ordering police officers to stop doing their jobs well...

Does this seem a bit topsy-turvey?

thats bullshit. Some tickets should be given out and some shouldnt. It is just like the cops here in San Diego who have quotas. They wont admit it but I am sure they do. They give out some fucked up tickets. Their job is to keep us safer. Giving out bullshit tickets does not make us safer most of the time.

While I hate it when cops nit pick for stupid shit, it is their job to do it. I bet they're only catching crap from city officials because they pulled over locals. If the mayor wants them no to write tickets, he should go about changing the laws, not ask them to resign for doing what they are obliged to do.

If you don't like the tickets, get the laws changed. "Don't shoot the messenger."

A cops job is not to keep you safe, it is to enforce law and order. Most cops, thankfully, believe it's their job to keep you safe.

Although it was a dick move for them to try to find every little infraction they could....I don't really think they did anything they should be fired for. It's their job. If they don't want cops writing tickets for failure to report an address change, than don't have a law on the books about it.

The charter of most police in the nation is build on the premise of "Protect and Serve". The laws they enforce are not designed for Protection or Service, but for revenue (i.e. speeding tickets).

Police departments across the nation selectively prioritize how enforcement is levied. Ask any LA Police officer about the policy relating to verifying the immigration status of someone they take into custody. Ask a resident of New Rome, OH about the events that led to the dissolution of their township. Go to Blufton, SC and tell me the only two cars they have--super-souped-up unmarked police car--doesn't have a singleness of purpose.

Having said that, there are plenty of cops that take a bit of pleasure in their work. I have no problem with that over all, when they get on a soapbox in the process, they forget their place.

A good test of that will be the lawsuit against Philly PD. The charges are that they A) didn't inform the public of the presence of a serial rapist that they were aware of and.....B) They were called to investigate screams for help, they knocked on the door of the apartment where they were supposedly coming from, they didn't hear anything an no one answered so they left. The girl who lived there was found raped and murdered by the Center City Rapist, time of death was found to be after the police came to the door.

Public Safety: Fact or Fiction

There's a reason they are called Law Enforcement Officers.

Responsibility of Police

Point well taken. Just don't let the folks at Texas Department of Public Safety know. :P

Check the site I posted. 90% of it is complete anti cop garbage, but the cases and stated meanings are sound.

Would you enjoy being audited by an IRS auditor who was skilled at extracting $2000 more than you owe from your bank account? After all, he's doing a good job of funding the government.

Not necessarily. In traffic cases the rule is "preponderance of evidence", not "beyond reasonable doubt". Judges interpret that to mean the cop is always right if it's your word against his.

So cops having a contest or meeting a quota can easily make up bogus infractions, and there's not much the motorist can do about it except pay up. I think the judge was correct.

Neither John nor I said we would enjoy the officer giving us 12 tickets from speeding 5 miles over. We said he was doing his job.

If it happened to me, yeah, I'd have some colorful remarks for the cop, his department, his genetic makeup, etc.

Same thing for the IRS agent. Of course people would hate it. But for the analogy to work, it would have to be the President and the head of the IRS asking the guy to resign for auditing people too well. To quote your quote from John, would you expect them to be "firing IRS agents for doing their jobs too well?"

[your analogy also doesn't work because most audits are more indepth than anyone wants to imagine; that's why we all fear an audit like the plague, and why most people go easy when they file in April, rather than going for every dime on the return]

I understand that it is their job to patrol the streets and keep us motorists safe, but a ticket contest or a set quota promotes the wrong behavior and attitudes. A good cop will do his job to his best judgement, and I don't support using a quota system to pay for city debt.

Where I come from, the Cops are rather bias towards the college students. For example, I see countless DD stops and sobriety checkpoints littered all over the Bar District on the evenings, usually one big roadblock/sobriety checkpoint every single weekend. However, IMO, the WORST place for Drunk Drivers is right below the Country Club where the City Elite mingle - I've seen some scary shit below that hill, and never a police officer to sit down there.....

Have you called the police department to request an officer? Or to complain about drunk driving in that area?

Just because they're not there now, doesn't mean you can't force their hand.

Also, if they don't do anything after your call, go sit there one night with a video camera and film them. That will (a) get everyone's attention (b) embarrass the hell out of the chief (c) get cops there

Or, if you're not worried enough, let it go.

ps - who do you think probably accounts for more DD accidents: college students or mid life crises?

It's not the same Bill, and you know it. Each person owes what they owe to the IRS; we have a rather complicated set of laws surrounding taxes, but they are there. Your example of the auditor getting people to pay "more than they owe" suggests that he's stealing. If through enforcement of the laws the auditor found that someone owed more than he thought he did, well, tough. In the case of the police enforcing existing laws, well, that's what they're paid to do, enforce the laws, right?

i'm sure you'd be quite pissed if you were imprisoned (and later executed, yes its possible for a cop and a judge who blindly follows the 'letter' of the law) for outdated, obsolete laws that are still on the books... of course the cop could always claim he was 'just doing his job'...

i seem to recall that 'excuse' not working very well in nuremburg, it certainly shouldnt work any better here, no matter what obscure, ignorant, obsolete 'law' is still on the books...

What the hell do executions have to do with enforcing and issuing traffic tickets?

You find me one instance where a person was put on death row because of one cop and one judge, based on some "outdated, obsolete law."

Nuremburg was about war crimes and genocide, not broken tail lights and court fines.

In the state of Ohio it is illegal for any law enforcement agency to have quota's of any kind.

I've seen some really stupid laws on the books in a lot of places. AggieDave's truck is a rolling infraction of about 25 different things here in Ohio alone :P

do you have any idea how much time and money it would take to really 'fix' the penal codes in every city, state and county? I guess we could pay for it by fining everyone who sneezes in public:S?

there are still death penalties and jail terms for obsolete offenses in many jurisdictions, i suppose since the laws are "still on the books" anyone who follows them is "just doing their job" and your just SOL if you happen to be the guilty party??

please. your logic needs some serious work..

Please, share with the class. What obsolete laws carry the death penalty?

And yes, if there's a law on the books, and an officer feels it should be enforced, there is no reason he should be asked to resign. It's not his job to be judge jury and executioner. it's his job to see that they get to do theirs.

These two were idiots for having a competition, but from what I read, they did nothing wrong.

I stand by my statement. Don't weasel out and put it on them. If you don't like the tickets, get the laws changed. "Don't shoot the messenger."
