FallingILweenie 0 #1 March 3, 2004 Hey all, I have come across some emails that seems suspicious regarding my yahoo mail. I got one claiming to be from adminsitration@yahoo.com saying my email account had been distributing spam, with zipped attachment to detect the problem. The second one claimed to be from support@yahoo.com saying my account would be frozen if i didn't "resign my acct info". This one too had a zipped attachment, saying it contained a document. I got a 3rd email that said the email servers would be down, also with an attachement--this one made me more suspicious (I was after the second one said i had to resign my acct info, whatever that means). The message said the attachment would set up a thing to forward emails to another account i chose. Now, all 3 attachments come password protected, but what made me think (aside from what i've already mentioned) is that none of them are written like the other messages i know are real. So, my question is, before i delete these has anyone come accross these messages? I just don't want to delete them unless i know they arent real cuz i'd hate to have that acct frozen. indyz 1 #3 March 3, 2004 They definitely aren't real. It's a scam called "phishing". Somebody is trying to get your personal information, or plant software on your computer, or both. Don't open the Zip files. Forward everything to abuse@yahoo.com.
EricaH 0 #4 March 3, 2004 Actually, my work's IT just sent out a warning about these EXACT same e-mail notices. It's another virus trying to get into your stuff. There is no can't. EricaH 0 #10 March 3, 2004 Mean people really suck!! The biggest question to me is "why?" oh, well. the world goes on. Tomas, I'd delete the zip file, get rid of it. there's a 1000:1 chance you'll need it & if you do, you can prob get it again. No need to endanger you computer further. Otherwise, I'd get an updated anti-virus program. This stuff updates pretty much everyday here @ work. ps. Lookin forward to seein you in 10 days - YEAHOO!! There is no can't. wildcard451 0 #12 March 3, 2004 Thanks to some other jackass, we now have the W32.Beagle.K virus. Details can be found at Symantec's Security Site. As Phree said you'll need virus defs from 3/2/04. Our university email has already blocked 5000 of these emails this morning. This also means that they aren't allowing .zip files through.... *mutters*
