SkydiveNFlorida 0 #1 March 3, 2004 Hydrogenated oils form trans-fats. In short, not good for your heart. I shop at the health food store, and anything I buy elsewhere I read labels on, so it takes me an hour to get 40$ in food. It seems America is pretty unhealthy. This stuff is in EVERYTHING! I doubt other countries are like this (of course, I don't know). I am going to do a "presentation" on trans fats soon for my weight training class. This will be good data I think:) thx;) Angela. jumpinjackflash 0 #2 March 3, 2004 I try like hell to avoid them. The way I do that is I work real hard through the week to avoid any prepackaged meals. I make damn near everything from scratch. Fresh Vegetables, I prepare the meat, pasta, etc.... I know it sounds daunting, but actually it is not. It's easy, fresh veg, fresh fruit, etc...... Good stuffIt's a gas, gas, gas... Stacy 0 #6 March 3, 2004 I try to avoid the transfats as much as I can- buying the natural ground peanut butter, *good* breads. There are some things however that just can't be sacrificed though. __
VanillaSkyGirl 6 #7 March 3, 2004 Oh Angela, sweetie...if you saw me eat, you would be soooo totally disgusted. I eat everything and anything, especially at night. I will not gross you out and go into detail, but just take my word for it, my diet is the worst. I am surprised that I don't weigh 300 lbs. I need to change my ways... Maybe you can give some pointers in the Women's Forum about what to eat and why.

I would totally do that, but I'm on a kind of strict budget. It's damn expensive to buy fresh fruits and veggies. And I love them. It's the one thing I completely splurge on. Well, frozen veggies more than fresh, because fresh tend to go bad before I can eat it. So, if we're trying to avoid hydrogenated oils and eat healthy...how do we keep from breaking the bank?Take me, I am the drug; take me, I am hallucinogenic. -Salvador Dali
jumpinjackflash 0 #11 March 3, 2004 Good point... I actually by most meats frozen, in bulk. I avoid boneless skinless anything. To do that, I typically buy the chicken whole or pieces and clean and debone myself.... Also, even though thigh meat is fattier, it's still good and it's incredibly cheap to buy the thigh mean and clean it. I like to throw it and breast into stir fry.... Pork is tough as hell to buy, very expensive, have to keep an eye out for deals there.... Same for beef... Veggies aren't too bad, but, again you've gotta shop your ass off.... Truly, putting a scratch meal on the table is a hell of alot cheaper than prepackaged shit anyday. You just have to be frugal. One Meat, One Starch, One Veg, One Fruit. What would be a good challenge is to see who could build what kind of meal, at what price. Hell, with bargain wines, you can even include Wine! I know I'm weird, But I love to cook as much as SkyDive, JackIt's a gas, gas, gas...
peacefuljeffrey 0 #12 March 3, 2004 Do I eat hydrogenated oils? Only if there's some cheddar sauce I can dip them in. misskriss 0 #14 March 3, 2004 I avoid them whenever possible... It's hard because it is in just about everything. It's especially hard when picking out healthy foods for the kids. Trans fat is everwhere..
mailin 0 #15 March 3, 2004 They're in everything - just depends on how much. Something can be labled transfat free - and even not label it on the nutrition facts if it has 0.5 grams of partially hydrogenated fats or less. You can't avoid them unless you purchase ONLY organic foods - which is pricey. JenniferArianna Frances

VanillaSkyGirl 6 #18 March 3, 2004 Oh God, and I ate almost nothing when I was in Eloy, Andrea. (I may have even lost a couple of lbs.) You should see what I really eat daily...it's pretty gross. Sorry, ladies. I actually seriously need to eat better. I was raised to eat very healthy. It's weird that I am such a junk food junkie. I go through stages when I pig out for a month or two straight, then I feel a little bloaty, so I eat more healthy for a couple of weeks. It never lasts, though. Btw, Skymama, has a wonderful figure, too, and looks beautiful always...so no fair back!
karenmeal 0 #19 March 3, 2004 I thought that saturated fat was worse than trans fat? (Even if only by a teeny little bit) I'm still going to use my margarine. "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
mailin 0 #20 March 3, 2004 THey're both bad. Saturdated fats are at least natural. THese transfats are chemical fats - and margarine is one of the worst ways to get them go with 'all natural' anytime you can. ITs these convenience foods that are so bad. Remember your grandmother used to cook with lard? Thats horrible stuff, but at least it didn't have chemicals in it to do all sorts of bad stuff to you. At the most saturated fats will raise your LDL, where as transfats raise your LDL and lower your HDL - its bad bad bad bad stuff. They've known since the 50s that these were horrible, and only NOW are starting to make people aware of it. So sad the way the government messes with us. Obesity is such a problem in the US and they fail to educate us properly. I'm only just learning about them, and i'm totally appauled. Jennifer edited becuase I have no idea what my brain was thinking with some of the words I mixed up.Arianna Frances
karenmeal 0 #21 March 3, 2004 My grandma never cooked with lard. My mom is a registered Dietician and a college professor on food science.. I'm also taking nutrition classes right now. And... they have not conclusively proven that trans-fats are worse than saturated fat. While obviously their original intent of taking a poly unsaturated fat and converting it to a more solid form while maintaining the benefits associated with unsaturated fats didn't work... it is still slightly better than trans-fat which is why its still reccommended that you choose margarine over butter. (obviously the best choice would be polyunsaturated fat) I think the reasons that obesity is such a problem is because of inactivity due to our technologically based society, increase in portion size and the convenience of fast foods. So its not really fair to say that obesity is a problem in the US because the government failed to educate us on the dangers of trans-fatty acids.... Casurf1978 0 #22 March 3, 2004 If you cook get some decent Olive oil. If at all possible the unrefined extra virgin is the best. I eat frozen and fresh vegis all the time. If you like peanut butter look at the label sometimes they hydro the oil to make it stay solid at room temp, one of the main reasons hydro oils are so popular, second one being longer shelf life. jumpinfarmer 0 #23 March 4, 2004 Buy frozen vegitables if you can't get fresh ones. They are frozen very soon after harvest and are normaly better than the fresh ones in most stores. Especialy buy frozen Birds-Eye peas, I just sighned a contract to grow some for them.
SkydiveNFlorida 0 #24 March 4, 2004 I try to stay low on saturated fats, too... but i'd rather have natural occuring fats than something that is basically man made. Butter vs Margarine??? Why go with either? There are so many alternatives out there. I really like Smart Balance. I do like butter occassionally, though. If i'm at a restaurant, I would rather have butter. If you are going to get margarine, get the tub kind rather than the stick kind because I think the stick kind has more hydro oil. Angela.
