WrongWay 0 #51 March 5, 2004 I admit I too was one of the stupid schmucks that went straight to freefly off of student status. Why? Look at it dude, it's complete and total freedom, a beautiful flight. Another thing that drew me to freefly was the attitude around it. Imagine you're on a plane with some FF'ers and RW'ers. What are the RW guys doing? They're sitting there with no smile, eyes closed, practicing grips and exits and the whole dive over and over again. There's no chatting, no pats on the back or jokes, just a serious attitude, an outsider looks at them like they're pro's because it looks like they're getting ready for a marathon instead of a relaxing jog. This is cool, and I admire bellyflyers for their commitment and enthusiasm for every one of their dives, but it's not my thing. What are the freeflyers doing on the plane? You hear a lot of old showtunes being sung (poorly I might add), jokes are being told (always sexual of course), and theres always some kind of secret handshake before the exit, accompanied by a huge shit eating smile. Freeflyers seem more relaxed, somewhat because they have to be, but mostly because for them it's all about fun, and the dive will be good even if they just hover in front of each other, geeking each others cameras. But just cuz I'm a freeflyer and support the freefly lifestyle, does that mean I can't fly on my belly? Of course not. Like I said, I was stupid for going straight to freefly, and I totally recommend to any newbie to get some very competent belly skills before going freefly. I luckily had a great chance to make up for my lack of belly skills by doing a lot of tunnel coaching, but like I said, I was lucky. So can I hold my own on my belly? Absolutely. Should all freeflyers be able to? Absolutely. Your belly skills are the basics, and should be natural and efficient to get you out of sticky situations, yes even in freefly.
