Wrap that Rascal

Recommended Posts

*hint* i seriously doubt he was smiling, that was a scary looking wrap up. i have seen the video from both perspectives and i can honestly say i definitely wouldnt have wanted to be in their position and hopefully i wont ever put myself in that position. They got lucky and i'm glad they're both okay.

TT - hopefully by now you get my humor - [:/]

*Sigh* Yeah - I'm sure it was a frightening ordeal - How did it come about that brit was behind him? Was he in the belly mount reserve?
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama

Slow like a turtle?

turtle is a different type of slow, sunny. We all make exceptions for him

The type of slow he's refering to is the speed at which Brit does stuff. Not the speed at which she ... oh nvm, you know what I mean

okay well from what ( I ) know, which means nothing since i'm just a 50 something jump noobie :P, they did a hop and pop from 4,500 and Tim was attempting to walk across brittany's canopy, when apparently he was too low, went into her lines, fell down, canopies wrapped together, brittany cut away, went to reserve, and then tim cut away, got out of the wrap and pulled silver as well. not sure what altitude they were at when they inititally got wrapped but i'm guessing around 2,000-3,000 feet. they were pretty low. :| Brit's in class right now but i bet they'll put the videos up soon.

The video turnout is really good. However I don't have an apparatus to hook up my camera to my computer. Maybe Tim does. I was under my reserve pulling my toggles out at 2500, Tim I'd say around 2300.

As Tim went to take the dock, he sank (or I vouch for deepening my brakes slightly) and cratered into the left side of my canopy. Quite a scary sight looking across and seeing him engulfed in my parachute. 2 revolutions and I cutaway as quickly as possible. Slowed the spin down and pulled the little silver. (my first reserve ride, beer ;)) Tim untangled as much as he could and executed emergency procedures as well. Wraps happen and for the situation given, I believe we did as well as we could have with the circumstance. I even have Tim's cutaway and reserve deployment on video... I will post a link as soon as I can.

Has he got line burn scars all over him now? WTF???!!

Believe he walked away with nothing but a wee scratch on the arm. Oh, I also have video of hookitt in the tree retrieving his main with a golf ball retriever... classic ;) And I will post pics of that as well when I get to my home computer.

Should not have Tim cutaway first? Sounds like he was in the wrap and could have been cocconed by both canopies and unable to do anything,,yikes,,i'm glad your'e all safe,,but that one made me nervous,,it could have gone bad,,really bad..

You're right, he wasn't smiling. We're concluding he was in the "way" part of yelling "cutaway." I, however, could not hear him, just read his mind ;)

I watched the video after the incident, and the following is my personal opinion. Brittany; feel free to correct me if my observations are incorrect.

Tim was cocooned either way. If Tim had cutaway first, IMO, he would have dragged Brittany down and in with him. Brittany seemed to be horizontal to the ground, at an even level with the canopy. She had no choice but to cutaway when she did, IMO.

Tim was exteremely lucky, IMO, to escape from that tangle alive. His reserve pilot chute seemed to be caught in the mess, but thanks to the free bag, he opened clean underneath it.

John's account is accurate. Brittany had no choice but to cutaway. I was pinned pretty well up against the bottom skin of her canopy. The G-forces were excessive. I had her full weight under me and my parachute was still in flated above me so I was pulled into her Parachute. If I had cutaway first, I'm pretty sure I'd be dead and could have easily taken her with me.

I pulled the reserve too quickly and it went over the top of her canopy. At that point I was direct bagged and had a reserve open very quick. johnrich is correct when he said my reserve looked like it was deployed from the mess.

I walked away with a bruise under my right arm, and lots of adrenaline pumping

I don't have time to interact with this thread today but When I get time I'll write up some more.

Thanks Brittany and John for the accurate descriptions.

To top it off the tree that my Canopy landed in had no branches for nearly 20 feet. Picture that climb:P

Any way I'm very happy to be here and I'm especially happy that Brittany was not hurt in the process. The folks at Skydive Houston are a great bunch. Brittany and I will always remember each other.

Cheers.. I'll check back in later.

It's good to be here.
