Women and Guns

Recommended Posts

KATV News, Arkansas:

"76 million people own a gun in this country. And now more than ever, the number of women who are buying and learning to fire guns is increasing.

"There are approximately 38,000 licensed gun owners in this state and each year, the number of women who choose to pack a pistol is increasing. The question is why? Women not only own guns but are trained to use a deadly weapon..."

I own two guns. One is a S&W .22 revolver that my grandmother gave me, the other is a Remington .22 rifle that my dad gave me. Someday I hope to own my dad's .38 Special Colt Police Special revolver (but I'm in no hurry to acquire it and I may have to abuse my brother to get it;)).

I've been shooting since I was in NRA rifle club at age nine. I've played with quite a few different firearms over the years, including some that many people have never heard of.

I own guns because I like them. They're fun to play with. If I could afford to I'd own more.

The fact that I could probably drop an intruder with one shot has nothing to do with it.

My family owns several guns...only one of which is "mine"...it's a Browning 30-06.

Why? Because we are a hunting family and enjoy our guns. (although the 30-06 isn't nearly as much fun to shoot as the little .22 pistol or the .22 rifle.)

We also have a 7mm Mauser, lever action 30-30, 270 WSM, Kimber 1911 .45 ACP, Ruger single-action .44 mag...
but those are more "family" guns. or my husband's guns than they are mine..

i own a glock 26, called the baby glock. its compact, its a C series, which means its compensated (recoil tamer) 9mm. great gun for a woman. my husband works out of town over 50% of the time, so i felt i needed the protection. i was raised around guns my whole life, shooting with my dad at age 9. and am real fond of glocks. i did own the glock 17, which are what police officers carry, but i like the 26 much better. rugers are also great for women...but i much prefer glocks. i say ROCK ON to any female learning to arm and protect herself. i dont go as far as to carry a concealed weapon, and im not even very familiar with the laws regarding that in illinois. but its something ive considered, just too lazy to do :)
Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!

Clicky: Illinois Gun Laws

38 states allow their citizens to carry concealed firearms. But not yours! Your legislators believe that Illinois citizens are less trustworthy than the citizens of those other 38 states. You cannot do it legally...

Yes John, I own several rifles. I love to target practice. While I am quite sure that I am no Carlos Hathcock, I take my weapons very seriously. I teach my children weapon safety. My hubby and I find it to be our responsibility to guide and teach in the proper manner in how our children should respect and handle weapons. If we don't who is going to teach them? Their friends? NOT! As a parent it is necessary, as an individual, it is a passion like skydiving.-Caress

But not with a .22 :S

Why do you need so many guns?

we don't NEED so many guns...we like them. The .22's are fun for plinking and small targets like rabbits and squirrel
the 30-06 and the 270 and 30-30 are good for elk and deer
the handguns are mostly for fun
the .44 mag is good for bear hunting
the 7mm mauser was built by my FIL and grandFIL and passed down to my husband

We don't have them because we NEED them - we have enough money to go to a store for our meat. We have them because we WANT them...

(that's like asking why we have so many televisions in the house...why do you need more than one? or so many telephones...or asking a collector why they have so many cars...)

Luckily...I live in Arizona, where it is very legal to carry concealed.

How do I know?
*whistles innocently* Huh? Did you ask me something?

A well placed shot with a .22 would likely stop an intruder. I didn't say kill.

Mabye. Anecdotal, but I recall reading a while back a story written by someone who was attacked by two men. He was carrying a Keltec P-32, which holds seven rounds of .32 ACP. He pulled his gun when they started beating him and shot both of them - if I recall right one three times and the other twice. They DID stop the attack... and walked to the hospital.

There's a LOT of discussion over the effectiveness of smaller rounds. a .22 wouldn't be my first choice of defensive caliber, a 12ga shotgun would be my second choice, not BEING there in the first place would be my first choice ;)

I do not own a gun, but I plan to get my concealed handgun license when I turn 21, mainly because AggieDave has his in his truck, and when I am sitting in there and/or driving it I could get in trouble without one. Once I have my license I may get a gun simply because I would feel safer driving at night, walking around town, etc with one that I know I can use if I need it. Dave can't be around all the time to protect me :D

So I take it that you would not be in favor of laws which allowed you to own particular guns only if you could prove to some government agent that you "needed" them. You would be in favor of freedom of choice, for citizens to decide for themselves whether or not to own firearms, for any reasons they choose, and which ones they should be allowed to own. If I'm reading you correctly, I agree!

Guns are like golf clubs, you have different ones for different purposes. You don't try to escape from a sand trap with a #1 wood - you use a pitching wedge. You don't try to hit a paper target at 600 yards with a .410 shotgun loaded with bird shot - you use a high power rifle. You don't tee off on a 500 yard hole with a 9-iron, and you don't try and shoot a flying quail with a .22 handgun. You need different firearms for different purposes!

My dear sweet husband said I needed to respond to you by saying this...
Let's just say I'm not in favor of laws that ban things based on how SCARY they look.
;)

(you and I agree, John....absolutely.)

It's a shame that the law requires you to be age 21. You can join the military and use guns to fight and die for your country at age 18, yet you can't be trusted to fight for your own life until you are age 21. Go figure...

And it sounds like Dave has briefed you correctly. If he was to let you borrow his truck, and not remove his handgun, then you could be arrested, whether you knew the gun was in there or not.

California is one of only 12 states that does not have a "shall issue" concealed handgun permit law. That means that if you apply for one and meet the qualifications, such as no felony background, etc., then the state "shall" (must) issue you the license.

California, on the other hand, is called a "discretionary issue" state. This means that some official can just decide, for any reason at all, not to give you the necessary license. Some sheriff's issue them, and some don't. Some give them only to well-connected people. It's a system that is rife with favoritism and personal bias. Whether you get one or not depends upon who you are and where you live.

Where is the answer 'I don't own a gun, but as soon as I'm 21 I'll have one.'

In Texas, you can "own" a gun at any age. You can purchase a gun under age 18 with parental consent. You can purchase one at age 18 or above, on your own. But you can't have a concealed handgun license until you are age 21.
