PhreeZone 20 #1 March 5, 2004 Alright I'm tossing this one out for comments... Every month my company (7000+ employees) does a "Spotlight" on 1 or 2 employees. In the past they have done spotlights on some people that do resuces of abused animals, someone that donates 20 hours a week to a soup kitchen, and lots of other "good community" type things. HR for my facility approached me this week about writing an article on me since they just found out I skydive. I guess they never put it together in the past 5 years, or when I was on crutches after a bad landing or me calling off on nice weather days. I really don't want to do it since its really not a big deal for me, the people doing the community relation things deserve more acknowledgement then I do. But on the other hand its a really good chance to get my name and face out there in the company (and it makes me immune to firing fora good 60 days ) Any opinions? Should I let HR do the write up even though it might not be publish? Or should I deny them and let them do it on someone much more deserving?Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
AggieDave 6 #2 March 5, 2004 Let them do it, you might get some new students at your DZ from it.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

They obviously feel that you ARE deserving! Let them write the piece. B2
lawrocket 3 #4 March 5, 2004 Phree: You do realize that this post alone is a form of self-promotion. There is nothing wrong with it. Look at all the positives. There are no negatives. Not only can you put a good face on the sport to your company, but put a good face on you for your company. Go for it. Any limelight you have from it may fade after a couple of weeks from people asking you for more details. But, you may make new friends, too. My wife is hotter than your wife. wildblue 7 #5 March 5, 2004 I probably wouldn't. Depends on your company though. Too many stereotypes associated with skydiving - you'd be living those down the rest of the time you work there.it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality
weegegirl 2 #6 March 5, 2004 I think it's cool. Let em do it. Brag about the sport and all the good things and promote your dz. Then go to your dz and buy them beer for your first self-promotion article!

jumpinjackflash 0 #11 March 5, 2004 I understand xactly what your saying Phree. But I vote yes as well. It's good for our sport. Good for you at your work. People will enjoy it. Everyone needs a good story to enjoy once in a while. Have at it, give them your best. My only advice is speak to the positives. Would you share the story with us back here? Copy/Paste so we can see what they wrote up on you? That'd be cool JackIt's a gas, gas, gas...
WrongWay 0 #12 March 5, 2004 Well, it's not really a matter of self promotion in my opinion, simply because you really don't want it out there, and you feel you don't deserve it. For those reasons, I have much respect for you bro. At least you care about those other people that you feel deserve it more. That makes you a better human being than half the people I know. However, if you do this, it's safe to say SGC will be getting some free advertising in one form or another. So the question is, do you want to turn it down and not have to worry about "self promotion", or do you want to do it just for the dz's advertising? I'm not going to tell you what I would do, simply because I don't know what I would. It's really a choice of what you want to sacrifice or save. Dignity or advertising. Vallerina 2 #13 March 5, 2004 Yes, I say that you do it, and make sure to get your tandem rating current again! If you're gonna sell yourself, do it right! You'll definitely have an ice breaker for the cool girls in your company, and you can try to swoon them by strapping them to yourself! I say "Do it!" just so you can play up the tandemmaster thing and try to score! There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning

Gawain 0 #18 March 5, 2004 Go for it...just ask if you can read a draft before it publishes. That way you can correct them on whether or not they say, "Remember when he was crutches, well that was because his parachute didn't open at 10,000 feet and he could roll through the impact... " Remember...HR is not your friend... So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light!
