Rainbo 0 #1 March 7, 2004 OK. So I have been in an excrutiating amount of pain lately. Did not want to go to the doctor since I am not working. Finally broke down an went this last Friday. Wierd how old strange shit can come back to haunt you. Back in the mid 80's we use to go to Z-hills on T-Day, X-Mas, and Easter to compete in 10,20, & 40 way comps. At the end of the trip we would all always go and eat oysters and drink beer on the last night. Well on this one trip we got some bad oysters & 7 out of 10 on our team got sick. I ended up in the hospital for like 2 weeks, almost died. It was weird, but not as weird as what happened next. My body started going haywire as I got better from the food poisoning. Got pink eye, then painful skin rashes, painful wee-wee, swollen joints. Had piles of docs all scratching thier heads. Turns out that white males are susceptible to something called Reiter's Syndrome that gets activated by severe intestinal disorders. Anyway this pain was in my lower spine and hip. So the Doc looks some shit up and figures out after I gave him my history that I am having a recurrence of this Syndrome. Turns out they have figured more stuff out about in the years since I was first diagnosed. So now I am taking some meds to try and get it under control. But the kicker is that if these do not work he says I will have to move to a chemo based therapy. Hmmmm... do not think that I want to go there. Not really sure why I am writing this other than I just needed to talk about it, anyway, anybody up to going out for some oysters and beer. My mom was diagnosed with Reiter's Syndrome years ago, apparently caused/activated originally by a bout with rheumatic fever when she was young. She's been on methotrexate (a chemo drug) amongst other meds over the years. Having seen what she's been through - I feel for ya. Be glad to join you for beers... but I'll pass on the oysters
Rainbo 0 #5 March 7, 2004 Yeah the joint inflammation is akin to rheumatiod arthritis. Needs to be treated the same way. All caucasians have the gene that causes the syndrome. Just more prevalent to occur in males or as in your mothers case because of the fever. Beerlight 0 #6 March 7, 2004 I love raw oysters and always knew of a risk of contracting hepatitus... But nothing like you described.....Holy shit!!! Good Luck.....
jerry81 10 #7 March 7, 2004 Have you ever considered any form of alternative or complementary medicine? I know my mom (md and practicing homeopath) has cured some really weird continuing illnesses and that an hollistic approach works best with chronic conditions. Western medicine may know a lot about the human body, but it is definitely not the absolute shiznit when it comes to healing it.
Rainbo 0 #8 March 7, 2004 I'm still digesting the intinial conversation with the doc. I guess I am hoping that the initial approach will keep things from progressing to the point that the alternative would come into play. If things reach that point I would think about alternatives. Until then ...!?! RainboRainbo TheSpeedTriple - Speed is everything "Blessed are those who can give without remembering, and take without forgetting." kallend 2,151 #9 March 7, 2004 Hi Rainbo. There are some things that I just won't put in my mouth. Oysters are near the top of the list. Hope it clears up pronto.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
Rainbo 0 #10 March 8, 2004 Thanks John, you know me. Nothing keeps me down to long. I am sure that my body will make things work in this initial phase. If not you could always volunteer to help carry my lazy ass to the plane so I can screw up a skydive or two. ladyskydiver 0 #11 March 8, 2004 UGH!!! Sorry to hear what you're going through. Hope you get better without having to do the chemo route. ...and to read this...just after I tried oysters for the pre-second time. Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly!
