Amazon 7 #26 March 9, 2004 I had a terrible fear of heights when I was a child.. I took up climbing and jumping as a way to overcome those fears... but you have no close point of reference in the plane.. Climbing you get that perspective thing when you are way up above something but the rock gets larger till its right in front of your face.. I get really bad on a ladder up cleaning out my gutters.. Lainey 0 #27 March 9, 2004 i'm so afraid of heights it's rediculous. I can't stand on the edge of a cliff, i just freak out way too much, my body wont physically let me. i think i'm afraid of the falling and hurting myself more than the actual height. i feel that when i'm going out the door of a plane i'm pretty safe, i have two parachutes on my back and i'm not afraid of the height then at all.... could be to do with the whole perception thing though as people have noted. jumpinjackflash 0 #28 March 9, 2004 Yep Me too I'm afraid big time of pain and anguish associated from bouncing off the porch..... I look at it this way, up high? Well hell, if things go to hell in a handbasket, not alot your going to feel right? on a serious side note, I just finally got over my fear of exit and my fear under chute. For the longest time, both really freaked me out. Now when that bad dog opens I'm thinkin COOOL time for some maneuvers.... amazing the way perspective can change attitude. peace, meIt's a gas, gas, gas... jumpinjackflash 0 #29 March 9, 2004 Aww shit Lainey. Welcome home. Tell me this. All my life, I couldn't stand looking out over something like that. I'd stand on the edge of a cliff, frightened to death. Thinking, some odd reason, JUMP!!!! Which is totally sick you know. Then one day, I learn, my urge to jump, needs to be satisified. No, that wasn't a joke, it really screws me up to this day. I can't wait to base, but I'm gonna. When I'm seriously flying well (x amount of jumps here), I'm gonna jump off of that damn cliff/bridge/building/etc..... Seriously though? Did you ever have that urge and wonder if your nuts???? oooh, new thread, post whore that I am!!!!It's a gas, gas, gas...

ACMESkydiver 0 #31 March 9, 2004 That's funny...just today, I'm in this big meeting downtown Seattle in a high-rise...all my colleagues know that I skydive. We're up some 30 stories or so...and across the way, on another high-rise, is a window washer. I say to the group "Damn that guy is freakin' me out"...they say in unison, "JAYE! You're a dang skydiver!!" I say "Uh-huh...and he has no parachute firmly affixed to his back. I skydive, but window washing...now that's dangerous!" So of course laughter ensues. Fine, I like laughter in business meetings anyhow, even at my own expense. Can't win 'em all... I have settled for the reason behind the hideous torture of skydivers' lack of bravery in other circumstances to spring from the feelings of inadequacy from the crowd in not having the huevos to skydive themselves. -At least that's what I keep telling myself. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. carbonezone 0 #32 March 9, 2004 QuoteI'm afraid of heights and climbing ladders, etc etc. If I'm climbing something and can see how high I am, forget it. I've found that with jumping, the height is so surreal looking that it doesn't bother me. Same here....it drives Scotty crazy when we go sight-seeing at some canyon or something. He walks right out to the edge and I won't even get close!!! Ladders...roofs...forget about it! <> Tami
MikeJD 0 #33 March 9, 2004 The only time I've had vertigo under canopy is when there's been a layer of cloud a long way below me. Sounds weird, but other people have told me the same thing. I do hate standing near the edge of a long drop, though. The day before Bridge Day we went hiking in the gorge and I couldn't even get close to the cliff edge without getting vertigo. Convinced me I wasn't going to be able to jump the next day, but you know what? Everything feels different when you've got your rig on.
