JohnRich 4 #28 March 8, 2004 QuoteTechie trivia - The queue control system for IBM products is called JES (job entry subsystem), before that it was HASP (Houston AeroSpace Program). I learned HASP as "Houston Automatic Spooling Program". It was the invention of what we know today as "buffering", by putting memory inbetween the computer and the hardware device. In the old days, the computer would spit data directly to the printer, so the printing speed was erratic based upon how fast the data was sent. And no other program could be set to print until the current one finished. HASP allowed multiple programs to dump print to memory simultaneously, creating a queue of waiting work, and the printer just used the buffer to get what it needed. That way all the devices could just work at their own speed, independent of each other. Gosh, is my age showing? Yeah, I started out on keypunch machines, before there was direct screen input. IBM 1401. Wire boards. Reading binary codes from lights on the computer console. Fun stuff...
