JohnRich 4 #1 March 11, 2004 If you've been curious about the content of the newly signed Constitution of free Iraq, here it is! LAW OF ADMINISTRATION FOR THE STATE OF IRAQ FOR THE TRANSITIONAL PERIOD 8 March 2004PREAMBLE The people of Iraq, striving to reclaim their freedom, which was usurped by the previous tyrannical regime, rejecting violence and coercion in all their forms, and particularly when used as instruments of governance, have determined that they shall hereafter remain a free people governed under the rule of law. These people, affirming today their respect for international law, especially having been amongst the founders of the United Nations, working to reclaim their legitimate place among nations, have endeavored at the same time to preserve the unity of their homeland in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity in order to draw the features of the future new Iraq, and to establish the mechanisms aiming, amongst other aims, to erase the effects of racist and sectarian policies and practices. MarkM 0 #2 March 11, 2004 Doesn't look too shabby. I wonder though if the Islam part will work over time. Would the US constitution have worked as well as it has if Christianity was "The Way"? Edit: actually I guess it only applies for the transition period. Wonder if they'll tie it in though on the final draft.

But whether or not they can live up to those ideals, is questionable...
Guest #4 March 11, 2004 Interesting. I was listening to a story on NPR this morning about Iraqi women forming a political caucus of sorts, to make sure they make their voices are heard. They're also making sure that the poorest of women (widows thanks to Saddam's wars and purges) are getting assistance and education. According to the story, the leader of this outfit (a female Gynecologist who is also on the US-appointed Iraqi governing council) has actually been encouraged by Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani. Big changes are happening over there. A LOT of Iraqis are sick of all the war and brutality, and know that they've got this one-time-good-deal to carpe diem and change the political landscape for good. If they are successful, Iraq could serve as a model for democracy in the Middle East. If I were a tinpot dictator over there, I'd be nervous (Khadaffi, for example). Those thugs have stayed in power through a lot of brutality, but they've also been somewhat politically astute as well. It'll be interesting to see what happens as a result of all this. Freedom, once its air has been breathed, is pretty heady stuff. mh ."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."
