cindee 0 #26 March 10, 2004 Quotedont stop the caffeine cold turkey Another option, so that it is not exactly "cold turkey", is to take Excedrine when you get a headache. It has 25 mg. of caffeine. Also, as others have said, lots of water!__________________________________________________ "If happy little bluebirds fly above the rainbow, why oh why can't I?" yardhippie 0 #27 March 10, 2004 Cut back on you depressant meds... if possible. I know w/ both of my surgeries, in the beginning they kept me asleep, or comatose, but as I began trying to be normal again found that they kept me from getting a decent nights sleep (maybe a tolerance thing). Now I only use them on rare occasion, and I sleep for hours. good luck.Goddam dirty hippies piss me off! ~GFD "What do I get for closing your rig?" ~ me "Anything you want." ~ female skydiver Mohoso Rodriguez #
billvon 3,090 #28 March 10, 2004 1) No beer on weekday nights. Alcohol, sugar and caffeine all keep me awake. 2) Start biking to work. It's a good way to exercise because you have to get to work anyway and it saves money. I definitely notice that on days I don't bike I have more trouble sleeping. 3) Don't exercise in the evening; make sure you do it before 6pm or so. It takes a little while for your body to wind down. skymama 37 #29 March 10, 2004 QuoteYou mention herbs, but not melatonin (natural hormone). Lots of folks highly recommend - have you tried it? Not just sleep, but really deep sleep - lots of vivid dreams. I've been taking Melatonin for years. It doesn't cure the problem of why I can't sleep, but at least it helps me sleep enough so I can get through the workday. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

I'll try not to get too personal, but there isn't a better way to make you sleepy and content than a big O (or two or three, whatever it takes.) Seriously, its natural, no drugs no herbs, no side effects, free. ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? rmsmith 1 #33 March 11, 2004 Quoteedit cuz I'm so tired my fingers have gotten fat. How about the tissue just above your ankles? Can you squeeze tightly, and leave dimpled impressions? If so, this is a sign of heart trouble, i.e., a lack of proper circulation. This could be your source of fatigue. You need to look up the free clinics in your area and get a serious check up. Muenkel 0 #36 March 11, 2004 Oh Lisa, I understand because I am going through the same thing right now. My situation is different though. Since my accident, I was put on some heavy duty meds that helped me sleep really well. But now, I think I have broken through their effect. I think something's on your mind which is worrying you. You need to work that out. In the meantime, I agree with cutting back on the alcohol and caffeine. Also, forget the pain meds. They're useless to you right now (as far as sleep is concerned). See if you can find some good aerobic exercise that won't hurt your neck. Maybe a treadmill? Like Bill said, do the exercise before 6pm. If all else fails, feel free to call me. I can bore you to sleep. Chris _________________________________________ Chris
skybytch 273 #37 March 11, 2004 Wow. Thanks again to all who've posted and pm'd. Got seven hours of sleep last night... I'll take it even if it was broken up into a 2 hour chunk and a 5 hour chunk. I'm feelin' pretty good this morning. That could be because it's my day off though.

Skybytch, I suffered from insomnia for 30 years. Had to make some pretty radical lifestyle changes before I could sleep at night. This what works for me: 1. Quit a carreer that involved jerks for bosses (Canadian Armed Forces). 2. Quit alcohol completely. 3. Limit myself to two cups (maybe 2 1/2 cups) of coffee per day and none after lunch. 4. Tension tamer herbal tea some evenings. 5 Aerobic exercise in the afternoons. 6. No "muscle" (i.e. push-ups) exercises after 6:00 pm. 7. Stretch regularly 8. Refuse any deep conversations after 9:00 pm. 9. Develop a consistent evening routine that starts with reducing the number of chores after 9:00 pm. i.e. brush teeth right after supper. 10. Read a boring book in bed (i.e. most text books). 11. Regular sex helps. The most important thing is finding YOUR sleep routine and sticking with it.
