Car of the Future?

Recommended Posts

Paraphrased from "Wired News":

Toyota has unveiled a concept car of the future that would very closely monitor, and in some cases restrict, the actions of its driver - including refusing to start.

To drive the car, a driver would have to enter a memory card into its console to turn on the engine. Based on the driver's experience and driving record, the car adjusts its engine performance, cutting back for motorists with less experience or spotty driving records.

The memory card would trigger electronic logging, that would tie the actions of the car to the specific driver, not the owner of the car as is done now with license plates. Thus, infraction tickets would automatically be sent to the driving offender, rather than the car owner.

New teenage drivers would have performance restricted. If your license is suspended, the car would refuse to start.

In other words, the government would be in control of your automobile...

I just won't buy one. But it does kinda suck. [:/]Reminds me of scenes from "The Fifth Element". :S
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

"Concept Car" is MotoWorldSpeak for "some wanker in design thought it was a good idea but ain't never gonna happen".

Seriously, how many really innovative "concept cars" have you seen at car shows and of those, how many have actually been mass produced?

EVERY car was a concept car at some point.

I see the difference, but the term concept car is specifically reserved for design exercises and technology demonstrators.

I think the word you're looking for is prototype.

Very, very few concept cars are ever intended to actually be manufactured. The elements may make their way into the more boring and marketable cars of the future though.

No Quade, I'm looking for the term "concept". If you're going to pick nits, it's true that MOST concept cars don't make it to production, but the technology debuted in the cars often does, and often in cars that LOOK quite similar to the concept cars presented at the auto-shows, but this thread isn't so much about looks as it is about technology.

Your statement that concept cars "ain't never gonna happen" is inaccurate and short sighted.

I'm done arguing this.

Actually, an ex GF had a mid sixties mustang fastback. the sides and rear end looked very similar. I always hated that version mirrors, but they were there too. The front just didn't get quite that "far out."

anyway, I'm more than concerned enough with some of the things going into cars nowadays.

there has been talk at state level of taxing people for actual interstate use, instead of evenly across the board. they were looking into GPS recorders or odometers that broadcasts trip meters, etc.

so when does the eye in the sky appear again? :S

Set the Wayback machine to 1999. We're going to the auto show. I figure 5 years is more than enough time to go from concept to reality.

Ok, so how many of these cars were ever actually manufactured?

I see at least 12 of those cars that made it into production. Some others are set to debut in one or two more years. Also, some of those cars were designed for the euro market and I don't know what they have over there....some of them may be in production too.

Exactly. Chop off the front, and put the lights in front, instead of those rolling things and you've got yourself something that loooks a lot like a Mustang.

Quade, looking at the other page you provided, I recognize quite a few of those cars. I was just flipping through the Consumer Reports 2004 car guide, so they're fresh in my mind.

Still, the son of the Pennsylvania crash victim, William Stott, Jr., believes law-abiding drivers should have nothing to hide.

Well, what do we need the fouth amendment for, since all us law abiding folks have nothing to hide. :S

Lee you guys crack me up...

Last time I checked.... the current administration has FAR more intrusive powers than ANY in the history of this country.

Just wait till it becomes important WHERE you go to church on Sunday mornings too.
