Radar jammers?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I keep hearing this ad on the radio about radar jammers, They are supposed to bounce a false signal back to the officer telling him that you are not in fact speeding. The ad says the company will even re-imburse you for any ticket that you do get....... Has anyone out there used one of these? do they work? is it a scam?

Thanks;
Roy

Years ago, they weren't worth 10% what people paid for them. You'll want to check local laws, as I don't think they're legal in VA or DC. They aren't a scam, but they haven't been at the forefront. If you find a web-site, post it.

As to the guarantee, read the fine print, because they're probably worthless against Laser/LIDAR speed equipment.

the ad also mentioned its effectiveness against laser..... sounds a bit too good to be true.....[:/] but I drive a rediculous amount of miles each year and this would be very nice ... not that I speed or anything:)

I know that in Maryland, if you are caught jamming a police, or other public radio signal, you will be charged with a felony. This includes radar jamming.
Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... It really pisses him off.

Waste of money. The laser ones are effective - at a range of anout 10 feet. :S
Hire Bill von - I'm sure he could take an old radar gun, tweak it, and give false readings to every cop in a 30 mile radius. :)
it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality

Am I the only one who thinks of Space Balls when talking about "jamming radar"

really i don't know if it would work.

"The radars been jammed sir"
"Jammed?"
"Yes, Jammed. Seems to be raspberry"
"there is only one person who would dare give me the raspberry....... Lonestar"

Passive jammers are shit....Active jammers can work, but are a violation of FCC regs which could get you some serious fines if caught by the wrong people. They are also illegal in many states. Check out THIS LINK for a review from Automobile Magazine(it's old, and it's on the Escort website...so take it for what it's worth).

Seems like even the best (and most expensive) radar jammers are pretty much unreliable and unpredictable.

It such a shame, I think that in this case we really could use a line of defense from speed traps. Since a lot of states (Especially Kansas/Oklahoma) are in a budget crunch, it's common knowledge that quota's are issued under the table and enforced. I just don't trust some of these traffic cops anymore....

The thing about quotas is crap(speaking from the LE side) THERE IS ALWAYS A QUOTA!! It is called the Traffic Enforcement Index. Number of tickets written must be in proportion to number of accident to recieve a certain percent at the end of the year, don't let ANY LE Officer tell you any different.

Commercial Jammers are pretty un predictable, have to find some skydive genious on here and we all make a mass order for him to fill to make it worth his while. Until then I will just use my handy dandy Radar Detector.

By the time you read this you have already read it.

Radar jammers are illegal and don't work well anyway. Laser "shifters", at least the good ones, are totally effective and legal to buy and use. Lasers and everything associated with them are controlled by the FDA (food and drug administration).

There is a good article about radar detectors, jammers, and shifters in Motor Trend (Jan 04 issue?)

One of the cable automotive shows did a really neat test on jammers and shifters. Only one company's product was 100 percent effective. I forget the name of the company, but I remember them saying that they advertise in Popular Mechanics.

Even if the "jammers" can't be counted upon, a regular radar detector can save you a lot of money in tickets. If you drive at, say, 10 mph over the limit, it only takes a split second jab on the brake to get you down to the legal limit. Just get used to doing that whenever your detector starts beeping, but make sure no one is tail-gating you first. All you have to do is avoid one ticket to pay for the radar detector. I wouldn't go without one these days.

get a good detector, spend a little time learning how radar really works, what the limitations of handheld 'guns' are and train yourself not to speed unless your shadowed...

i havent had a ticket (except once when i was being stupid) that i havent successfully beaten in court in years...primarily because most highway patrol officers use their radar 'guns' outside the operating parameters they are designed for...

of course if more cops simply gave tickets for "excessive speed" (totally a judgement call so there is no fighting it) instead of trying to claim their readings were accurate, that wouldnt be true...

that said, a properly trained officer in the right location will nail you before you even touch the brakes using either radar or laser...learning to recognize good areas of ambush is also key...

hmmm that will take a bit, as i'm rather busy lately...but i think i've got some good slides that illustrate PRT, PRF, resolution, range bins and update rates pretty well...I'll have to build some good ones on radar cross sections and shadow...as those are the most important two things to think about from a 'avoiding speed traps point of view....

So much of avoiding speeding tickets is being aware while you are driving.

All of the ones that I have gotten were times where I was not paying full attention to the raod in front of me and just blew past the squad car w/o even seeing it. The sheriffs by me are pretty good. They know how to catch people when they want but they target the out of state 'business men' from il. (im in wisconsin) A deputy that I know gave me some tips of how to avoide getting a ticket.

I still think that the most important thing is to pay attention and not just speed w/o being aware of the fact that you are speeding. Radar detectors are nice but if you don't get one that is decent you will just be annoyed by it and never slow down when it goes off.

My vehicle is black, has no front plate, and I drive with my headlights on pretty much all of the time. These were all things suggested to me to help in making it harder to hit me with a laser. Don't know if any of them are true, but anything that might help and is easy to do is worth trying.

Fast in more ways than one!

In 1988 a guy in Garland Texas made an active jammer called the "Judge". As far as I know, it was the only real jammer on the market that actually worked. The problem was, it "interfered with a police officer in the performance of his duty" and got the manufacturer in quite a bit of trouble. The officer being jammed could tell that he was being interfered with so you had to be in a group of vehicles if you were gonna use it. The Judge is no longer being made or sold. If you can find one (it sold for about $400 in truck stops around Garland then), it would probably be very expensive now. It worked on X, K, and Ka bands and was very reliable but illeagal - uhh, unlawful - cause illeagle is a sick bird, lol.

A total scam. Car & Driver took one apart once and it was total garbage wired to a red LED.

There's a handy little diode called the Gunn Diode. It emits microwaves. All the little boxes that hang above automatic door openers at your local grocery store contain one. Ever notice how whenever you drive by a store that has one, your radar detector goes off on either the X or K band??? That's why. A Gunn Diode can be purchased from the manufacturer (check the Anarchist Cookbook for more specific details), and "tuned" to the proper microwave frequency to act as a jammer.

So if you really want one, there's a hint on where to start to build one yourself!
