Big moments you remember where you were

Recommended Posts

9/11 I was going across the Columbia River Bridge from the campground to my boat for a day of salmon fishing on the boat. I heard the radio and tuned into the internet at the bait shop as soon as I got there and heard about the second plane . I immediately knew we would be sending off your sons and daughters to far off places for revenge.

Challenger I was getting ready for a geology class when the news hit.

Columbia I was sitting there in Operations as the news flashed up on the MSNBC monitors.

JFK I was in elementary school and was soooo sad he was a great man that asked his fellow Americans to be part of the American dreram and not just milk it for all it was worth.

Ronald Reagan getting shot.... I was shopping in Vancouver Canada.. and really frightened by the Nut Case former General ....Sec of State getting upat a press copnference and saying he was in charge. I was wondering about the fact that every 20 years a president was killed in office.. Reagan was the first one to kind of survive.. but he was NEVER the same man again.. he slept thru the rest of his presidency while a bunch of political hacks subverted the government with all the plausible deniability a president could ever want.

Kurt Cobain: after hearing all apologies on the radio my brothers college roomate turned the radio off and played that song on cd over and over so I could learn how to play it on guitar...after about an hour of playing that song over and over again we turned the radio back on and found out kurt was dead...

9/11 - I was at Ohio State Universtity at OSUMB tryouts. We had heard rumors and thought it was a joke till the director got up and said that the rumors were confirmed, the twin towers had been destroyed. All of a sudden you hear a girl bust out in tears and screaming. Both her parents worked at the WTC. :|

I didn't know her personally, didn't know who she was, but I'll never forget the look on her face.

911- in class with my best friend who started balling cause he had a cousin who worked in the pentagon. spent the rest of that day in that class and with that friend. It was hard. Reasons why i joined the service. (by the way his cousin was fine, had just walked out of his office and the plane hit about 2 minutes after he was out of its way. Yeah it almost hit dirrectly where his office was)

challanger-......
Columbia disaster- at my house nursing a hang over and watching the news.

Columbine- in my 9th grade english class when my teacher went running out cause she heard it on the tv or somehting...

those events are things that shape not just who we are as people, but who we are as a country. may we never forget those events and the people we lost in those tragic events

1) 9/11
Amy called me to make sure I wasn't on that flight; I came within 20 minutes of being on AA flight 11.

2) CHallenger explosion
We were skiing; the launch was on the TV at the condo. Gene said "Hey, the shuttle blew up." I said "What?" He said "There was a big puff and the rockets on the side flew away." "That's SRB separation," I said, not even looking. "The puffs are the separation motors." "Oh," Gene said. After a few minutes he said "I think it really did blow up."

5) Columbia disaster
Actually heard about that one on DZ.com.

May 18th, 1980 - I was in Sunday school in Des Moines, WA when Mount St. Helens blew up maybe 50-60 miles to the south of us. Went home & listened to the radio all day (we didn't own a TV).

Challenger explosion - was in my computer science class in high school, watching the launch. Our teacher in that class had gone very deep in the competition that put McAullife aboard. He nearly fainted, slumped in his chair, put his head down and didn't say a word the rest of the period. I went home after that class & spent the day watching CNN.

Tiananmen Square - Aboard an amphib ship (troop carrier) in the Pacific Ocean. We were sent cruising north to go evacuate American citizens from China but ended up not being needed. Never did see the TV footage.

Waco - Watching CNN with my grandmother.

Oklahoma City - I was at work at a National Lab. Nobody knew what was going on at first, they ended up sending all employees home & closing the streets around our local Federal Building. Went home, watched CNN all day.

September 11, 2001 - We were just waking up. Wished my g/f happy birthday. As she headed for the shower she told me the radio had just mentioned something about a plane hitting the WTC. I laid there and listened and heard them say the other tower had just been hit. Grabbed g/f, headed upstairs to the TV and watched the towers fall. Went to DZ & told the DZO, then watched with him for awhile. Went to work at the same national lab for a couple hours till they sent us all home. Went home & watched CNN until the evening, then tried (not very successfully) to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. I don't think we went to work the next day either.

Columbia Explosion - At a card shop getting ready for a Magic tournament. Friends I was meeting there who are bigger geeks than me were late, and told me they had been watching TV & what had happened. Went to a bar & watched CNN for awhile.

Dave
