Vallerina 2 #1 March 15, 2004 For the week beginning March 21st, I propose that all join in for 7 days of fun-filled carbs! "Just ignore the Atkins-approved menu items!" No! I will not just ignore it! I can pick and choose my battles, so I am taking a stand for something I feel very strongly for....carbohydrates! What have carbohydrates done to us besides give us lower cholesterol, show us love with beer, and give us a nice little rush to get us through our days? Complex or simple, I just love them all! Folks, I live in fear. I fear that "Atkins-friendly" foods will replace the foods I love on menus everywhere. It's already happening...replacing warm, delicious bread with tortilla shells. Yuck! My fears inspired my idea of having everyone in the world take next week as a Carbohydrate Appreciation Week. Let's show our sugars and fibers how much we love them. Buy that huge Quaker Oats tub! Eat all of those apples! Don't cry for eating a candy bar!!! Who will join me in my cause? There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning
Stacy 0 #2 March 15, 2004 I think the whole atkins thing is a laugh. If one wants to lose weight, freakign exercise and burn more calories than you eat. It's simple really. Avoiding carbs is silly, carbs are healthy in moderation! My dad did Atkins, lost a lot of weight. Started eating the carbs again and weight came right back. It's just not natural. __
skybytch 273 #3 March 15, 2004 I'm with ya. Easy enough to do since I don't limit my carb intake as is.

steve1 5 #6 March 15, 2004 Your body needs complex carbs. Less of them if you are diabetic. I don't think anybody knows the long time ill-affects of an Atkins diet, because there isn't much research on this. All I know is that I feel like crap when I don't eat enough carbs. A low fat diet that is low in calories is a better way to go in my opinion. I know you can lose a lot of weight following an Atkins diet, but in the long term I can't see how this could be healthy at all. In my mind something like a potatoe is one of the most perfect foods you can eat. It's not high in calories, if you bake it, and it's loaded with nutrients. So, that's my sermon for the day, folks. Now all I need to do is practice what I preach. ....Steve1
Vallerina 2 #7 March 15, 2004 QuoteAll I know is that I feel like crap when I don't eat enough carbs. Yeah, when I was in my "fat and desperate to lose weight" stage, I tried the Atkins diet, and I lasted for about 5 hrs on it. I decided that diets that make my body feel bad are probably bad for me.There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning
rehmwa 2 #8 March 15, 2004 Mmmm - I'm eating trail mix right now - lots of carbs mmmmm (munch, chomp, munch) (however, I like Atkins for some reasons - good things: 1 - knowing your carb intake and choosing your diet is ok, 2 - natural fats and cholesteral are fine the processed stuff is not, 3 - meat and cheese snacks are more effective than crackers for curbing appetite, 4 - the insulin affect on appetite is good to be aware of. All these things can be done or allowed for without formally doing Atkins. I don't like Atkins because I'm active enough that the diet makes me tired - I need more carbs. That said, I'll use induction once in a while anyway, but don't expect me to give up pasta for more than a couple weeks - I can kick start my metabolism any number of ways and combining that with exercise and portion control is still best and doesn't force me to any extreme measures. I'm skeptical of people bad mouthing it because of wacko veggie types......) Mmmm more trail mix ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
winsor 236 #9 March 15, 2004 I haven't read Atkins' work, but synopses of his regimen indicate some oversights in his approach. The key is not so much carbohydrates per se as it is glycemic index and the tendency to reactive hypoglycemia. Complex and bound carbohydrates are just fine, while high fructose corn syrup is the absolute worst. An excess of simple carbohydrates is conducive to a high bad-to-good cholesterol ratio as well as type II diabetes. A balanced diet that stays away from things that cause blood sugar spikes allows one to eat a hell of a lot more without packing on the pounds. It is also sustainable, whereas Atkins is not. Exercise alone cannot outweigh the effect of the insulin spikes that result from consumption of high glycemic index foods. You just get well-toned fat. Actually, real slow-cooked oatmeal is fine for staying slim, as are whole apples. Most candy bars, however, are bad news. When I was living on pretzels and Coca Cola Classic as an airline pilot, I put on 15 pounds that exercise wouldn't get rid of. I now try to eat zero white sugar, high fructose corn syrup or white flour, and my weight and clothes measurements are the same as they were 30 years ago. Since I have like 10 jump suits, it's easier to stay slim than to come up with gear that will keep my fall rate under control. I'm also used to having a 42" chest and 30" waist, and don't consider being fat an option. Blue skies, Winsor
AndyMan 7 #10 March 15, 2004 I love the atkins diet. Sunday me and craichead went shopping, and stopped for lunch. I had a big ole plate of fried chicken and mac&cheese. I skipped the bun because I knew it was unhealthy. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Vallerina 2 #15 March 15, 2004 Quoteall the people trying to lose weight will probably just hurl high-carb potatoes at us. That was about the funniest visual I've gotten in my head today!!!! Thanks for the laugh! Adding on:I was informed that this would actually be a good thing for our cause. We could eat the potatoes, and this also means that they would be buying the potatoes...keeping our carb industry alive! I tested out the market today to see if there are enough delicious carbs to survive on for a whole week. My results turned out very well! I've been tempted to get a T-shirt that says, "Body by Carbohydrates". And whenever I see an overweight person loading up a plate with cheese, eggs, oil, meat, and skipping the rice, pasta, bread, I want to tell them I'm the 'anti-Atkins'. I may get downright snotty if anyone ever suggests Atkins is healthier than my present almost vegetarian diet.
