Practical test through FSDO?

Recommended Posts

There's a rigging student here in TX that needs to take her Practical Test. We can't find a DPRE. They're thin on the ground here. We've checked the list and the closest is in Missouri.

Has any one taken their practical through the FSDO? Any advice on how to twist their arm to encurage them to provide a test? There is a full service loft with 40 ft table and all the nesasary acutraments but we need an inspector. What are the grounds for requesting/demanding that they provide a test? Can they exspect her to travel half way across the country to get tested? This would be diffacult for her as she has young children, work, etc. and this has held up her getting her ticket for several months.

RiggerLee,

I have not done it, but i know for a fact it is possible. Our local FSDO guru down in Wichita has been tasked with keeping tabs on the riggers and DZ's in the midwest area (as part of the repercussions of a few incidents in the Missouri Area, but that is a different story). He's a fantastic man, I've had some good talks with him. When he started, the FAA sent him to Idaho for a year to rig with the smoke jumpers and gain 'proficiency' with parachute equipment. He told me that he has acted as DPRE on a few occasions.

Lee, are you a master rigger? If so, why don't you just get the FSDO to appoint you as DPRE? You might have to go to Kansas City for an orientation (or wherever the feds do that nowadays) but every area should have a local DPRE.

I had a hard time taking even the written test at the San Diego FSDO. I swear the guy says to me, "Do we give that test?" Then he and I spent 45 minutes looking through the file cabinets looking for a damn copy of the test!

The FSDO manager can elect an inspector to give the O&P but that Inspector has to hold a riggers certificate. It does not have to be a Master's certificate.

Also, they will be busy and it most likely will be a date, well into the future, before they will/can give it.

You can on the other hand request for another DPRE to test in your area. We do this every year.
