Hey computer/techie people, I need some help.

Recommended Posts

How ya doin'? Hope everyone is doin' well, it's been a while since I've been able to check in. I'm not very good @ these things, so any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Ok...when I turn on my computer & log on, I first get a message which says something like "Messenger has encountered a problem, anything you were in the middle of doing might be lost, blah blah blah, click here to send error report to Microsoft, click here to view error report information, etc." The error code is 39. I use Windows XP. I clicked & sent the error report to Microsoft , & a few minutes later a message came back saying something like "Thanks for sending the report, but we are unable to correct the problem, you can download an updated version of Messenger which is more reliable, blah blah blah. Also, both my cd/dvd drives, printer, & Windows Media player don't work. It's like they all just disappeared. When I pull them up under system info it shows them, but beside them they have exclamation marks inside yellow triangles. I went through the troubleshooter & tried everything I could find, one said to uninstall & reinstall the drives for them which I tried but it didn't work. >:( Any ideas to point me in the right direction?? As I said I'm not a computer person & you may need more info than what I've given. Perhaps I'm missing something simple. Anyways, thanks for the help in advance, pm me if you like or just reply below. Thanks!! Don

$5 says if you get ahold of someone at tech support for windows......... they will tell you to reinstall windows.

Might help. Or you could back up as much stuff as possible to other drives, CD Burner works great for this is you have one and it works, and then wipe your system and start over. But you may want some help with that!

Did this just all of a sudden happen? What did you do to the pc prioir to this?

Sounds like some drivers are screwed by what you said your system is doing. But cd-roms are dos drivers so then again im not sure.

Be sure to let us know what you may have done prior to this happening.

Error code 39 happens when you sometimes try to install new hardware.

My bet is its your cd-rom drivers.

Good luck!

Things seem pretty messed up. If you have a computer that you bought right from a store, it may have come with a restore CD. If it did back up all the stuff that you have saved.
-email
-pictures
-documents
-mp3s

whatever you might have added that you don't have the disc handy to reinstall. Then use your system restore.

If you got the computer from a friend, find out if they know how to rebuild it, or what friend they got it from. It sounds like the problems your having aren't really simple ones and its very hard to tell w/o being there some times.

DO NOT REFORMAT until you have tried this:

Method One
Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} (To get here if you dont know, click start>run and type regedit. then browse through the HKEY and find the directory listed above. USE CAUTION tho. If this isn't done correctly, you can screw up windows.)

NOTE: If you are getting a code 39 message, it may be that additional third-party filter drivers were added to UpperFilters and LowerFilters values in addition to Adaptec filter drivers. In that case, you may try to remove the non-Adaptec filter drivers first, leaving the Easy Creator filters in place to see if the Code 39 goes away. If you still receive an error code 39, 32, or 31 message, remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely in the preceding key.

Restart your computer.
Method Two
If the above method does not resolve the code 31 error message and restore access to your CD-ROMs, if you also have Media Player version 7.0 installed, you can uninstall Media player version 7.0 and download and install the latest release posted at the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia8

I'll give it a try. Thanks for the help, & thanks to everyone else who has replied & pm'ed me. As far as what I may have done to cause the problem, the only thing I can think of was I did a "disc defragmentation" recently, but didn't notice anything weird until a few days later when I tried to print something & later tried to install the software for a cable modem for high speed internet. Nothing worked. Before I try any of this though I think I'm gonna call my 20 year old nephew who's a computer whiz to supervise. He owes me big time, I'm the one HE always calls when he has a problem with his car. I'm sure he can help figure THIS out, but let the "check engine" light come on or the car not start & he's calling Uncle Don!! Thanks everyone, I'll let you know how it turns out!! Don
