billvon 3,110 #1 March 17, 2004 . . . on Face the Nation this Sunday. ---------------------- SCHIEFFER: Well, let me just ask you this. If they did not have these weapons of mass destruction, though, granted all of that is true, why then did they pose an immediate threat to us, to this country? RUMSFELD: You and a few other critics are the only people I've heard use the phrase "immediate threat." I didn't. The president didn't. It's become kind of folklore that that's what's happened. The president . . . S: You're saying that no one in the administration said that . . . R: Well, I can't speak for everyone in the administration and say . . . S: But the vice president didn't say that? R: Not - not - if you have any citations, I'd like to see them. F: We have one here. "Some have argued that the nuclear" - this is you speaking - "Some have argued that the nuclear threat from Iraq is not imminent, that Saddam is five to seven years away from having nuclear weapons. I would not be so certain." (Rumsfeld, 9/18/02) R: Mmm hmm. And - and - uh - F: Close to imminent. R: Well, uh, um, I tried to be precise, and I tried to be accurate, and I'm so . . . F: "No terror state poses a greater or more immediate threat to the security of our people and the stability of the world than the regime of Saddam Hussein." (Rumsfeld, 9/18/02) R: Ah - eh - eh - my view of . . of the situation was that he, he had . . we, we believe . . . the best intelligence we had and other countries had and that . . .that we believed and we still do not know . . .we will know. -------------------------------- Reminds me of this for some reason. lawrocket 3 #2 March 17, 2004 You know, it's kind of sad how Rumsfield has gone from a favorite and cultural icon due to his absolute bluntness to this, where he is clearly evasive. I would like to see the old Rummy back... My wife is hotter than your wife.

What inflection of what words are flattened by text? Could eh eh eh be a chuckle - or a stammer - or what was the author trying to sensationalize on this piece?I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun

Like it wasn't subject to sensationalized editing. If you ever witness Bush or his cronies doing anything slightly amiss, you better believe that someone manipulated your perception of their actions in some way because they are perfect and decent and never do anything wrong. slug 1 #7 March 17, 2004 I'm wondering if Dumsfeld hired Baghdad Bob as a consultant for dealing with the media. R.I.P.

wmw999 2,584 #12 March 17, 2004 QuoteAll the rest had massive skeletons in the closet Yep, I'd have to agree. A lot of the very things that make a president effective (ability to get differing folks to compromise, sell the public and Congress on his vision, etc) require all sorts of ability to maneuver and manipulate. I don't like the "do it my way because I'm the President" approach any better, though. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Mostly agree, but the difference may be that few have campaigned so strongly on the issue of "character" and have pledged so emphatically to "Restore honor and dignity to the White house". Not saying he is the only president to lie, but he is bringing it perhaps to a craven, all-time low - particularly ironic in light of the emphasis he put on "character".
