25 jumps.

Flygirl...I love that you are so motivated, even though this has been a very difficult journey for you. Nobody that has more than about 30 jumps gives a rat's behind how many jumps anyone takes to pass AFF. It doesn't matter at all later on... TRUST me.

Thanks.Rosa.

I know this all too well. People are impressed now when I tell them Im a private pilot with 260 + hours..
They don't care how long it took me to get that certificate.

It is all just gaining experience.:)

Also, there is a book that you should read..."Mental training for Skydiving and Life".

Absolutely!

As far as relaxing goes, have you ever done yoga, any type of meditation or even Lamaze breathing flygirl? You can use those breathing techniques when you're skydiving too. At almost 1000 jumps I still spend a few minutes concentrating on my breathing during the climb to altitude, more than a few minutes when I'm doing something new, different or bigger than what I normally do.

Consider building several pauses for a deep breath and a smile into your dive plan (of course talk to your instructors about this before doing it). You'll be amazed at how relaxed you can be in freefall simply by reminding yourself to breathe and smile.

Cindi,

I have that book, I'll bring it out to the DZ this weekend for you. It definetly helps.

I know you'll get it, You have a cast of many waiting for you to solo.

I would like to point out that I was not intending to malign the Quantum Leap dropzone, and my remarks were intended to reflect a question about the AFF program, and contributing factors that make it work as it does.

I have not been to QL, and do not know any of the instructors there, so my apologies if I have unitentionally offended anyone from that organization with my comments.

Lamaze breathing

LOL I couldn't relax then either :S
BIG babies and Lots of SWEARING.. that breathing stuff didn't work :S

Thanks Lisa.
I have a hard time focusing.. tuning out the things around me.. on the plane.
The few times that I have actually managed to do that, things went much better.

Nah Bill, I don't think anyone was taking it that way.
You make some good points and I could see where that could become an issue.

In this case though these guys are all about safety and they will do everything they can to make sure the skydiver is capable when they go out that door on there own.

peace and warmth,

That was Extremely evident in their Safety Day sessions, yesterday.

I'd be happy to make a load with you, at QL, or Perris, or anywhere else. Can't tell you much about AFF, as I came up in the seventies under the old static line & gradually increasing freefall system, but it took me something like 32 jumps and one sprained ankle to get off student status. There's no escaping what I've always called the "ugly duckling" phase, it's just been moved around some by modern training methods. But you'll get through it and fly like a swan. Just never forget it and ALWAYS have compassion on those who follow you as they suffer through the same worries. This is your year, be safe and enjoy it.

Believe me, I will. I have so many people who have encouraged me through this. I try my best to be encouraging to others no matter what stage of learning they are at.

You reminded me of when I was going through static-line (at $45 a pop)....every time I'd get down, I'd listen to the debrief, then anxiously ask if I'd passed that jump or not. My instructors would look at each other, then say "I'm not sure....let me see how much we've got in the petty cash box." :)
They only got me for one jump over the minimum.

It took me $12,000 (YOUR READ THAT RIGHT)
28 months and over 154 hours to get my private pilot license.
The national average is between 5-7K and 60-70 hours.

Wow, that is a lot of time for a private.....kudos to you for sticking it out. I hope you're maintaining currency now that you're certified! That's where most people fail once they get their private....they don't stay current.

Like I said before....don't worry about jump numbers. You'll finish when you're ready to finish.

A ridiculous amount of $$ isn't it (the best part is of that total cost, I was only out a couple thousand.. the Ex paid for the rest!!

Yes, I fully intend to stay current.
I got my private last April and flew over 100 hours before the end of the year.

I have only flown once this year since I am jumping so much. I do hope to at least break the 300 hr mark by this December.

I have actually flown to the dz (one hour vs the 2 hour 20 min drive) made two jumps and flew home.
The best of both worlds of flight.
I look forward to more days like that this summer.

I honestly had intended to start my instrument training this past January, but skydiving is taking up all my time and $.

One thing at a time :)

That's pretty damn impressive. Most people are lucky to be able to work in 5 hours a month between money and time constraints...you did well over double that! If you make it down to Florida(I'm in Orlando) and want to go do some aerobatic flying...drop me a line. I have access to a couple different aerobatic airplanes(a Citabria and a Pitts S2B).

If you're jumping at Rantoul, we'll make a jump or two together. Maybe we can set up an all pilot way jump.. B|

Sounds like I have a LOT of work to do between now and August....

About my flight hours last year. I was making up for being a student so long.
Not long after I got my rating I flew 5 days in a row. The people at the airport thought I was crazy.
I told them I thought I should get Frequent Flyer discounts!

I made it a point to try new airports everytime I went up.
Took a lot of family and friends up. I love sharing that experience with others.

I had even wanted to take aero training and tailwheel training. Just not enough $$ to do it all.
I don't have anyone local who trains for either.

Don't know that I will ever get to Orlando.. but the plane ride would be a blast.!!!

cindee, i hope it won't take you a couple of years.

you stick with it too!!!

Well, it's definitely gonna be a couple of years. I hurt myself on jump #8 last july. I still need to schedule ACL and meniscus repair, but once that is all over, I should be cleared to jump again. That 1st one back is going to be exciting and scary! I hope we can jump together someday!

Yep, I'm in Delaware, and will be finishing my training at Crosskeys. Let me know when you visit New Jersey and maybe we can make some jumps there! We just might both be through AFF by next year.;)
