Meteor To Hit Earth September 27th

Meteors hit the earth all the time. Asteroids are what worry people, because they're large enough to cause damage. Per a list of potentially hazardous asteroids maintained by the Harvard Observatory, the only threat in September is from Toutatis, a half-mile diameter asteroid. Its closest approach will be 900,000 miles, or rougly 3 times the distance from the earth to the moon. That will happen September 29th of this year.

Woohoo!! We're going to live! Right?

Would this be the April issue of Maxim? Just an off-hand guess, but did you consider that this may be an April Fool's joke on the part of Maxim?

I dunno...it's the one with Paris Hilton on the cover, that's all I know.

I do know that I've talked to friends who have heard about this meteor from more sources than just Maxim, so I doubt it's an April Fool's Joke, but not a bad inquiry at all...

Great, that is when my current job contract ends. Now I don't have to worry about looking for another job.;)

I always thought an asteroid turned into a meteor as soon as it hit the earths atmosphere. Essentially they are the same thing, just depends where in space they happen to be at the time. Or, is that the difference between meteor and meteorite?

Asteroids are minor celestial bodies, smaller than planets but larger than dust or debris. One popular definition is that an asteriod is large enough to have measurable gravity (i.e. over a kilometer or so) but smaller than a planet (i.e. too small for gravity to pull it into a round shape.) Some astronomers refer to even pebbles as asteroids. The largest one I know of is Ceres, with a diameter of about 1000km.

Any object on a collision course with earth is called a meteoroid. During atmospheric entry, when it's burning, it's called a meteor. After it lands (if it does) it's called a meteorite.

As I was flipping through this month's Maxim, I noticed an article that said a meteor roughly the size of Texas has a 60-some % chance of hitting Earth this September 27th.
Giddyup.

Damn, I knew I didn't like Texas:P. Anywho, I usually have the same chance of hitting the earth too with my packing... :D;)

I realize Maxim isn't necessarily the most trustworthy source in journalism, so I was wonderin if any of your astronomy buffs knew anything about this.

Giddyup.

Sure this isn't just a review of "Armageddon" the movie.

Honestly, it's possible. Paris Hilton's lucious body did have me a bit dazed and lightheaded while trying to read the article. Hmm... ;):)
