Kramer 0 #1 March 23, 2004 As I was flipping through this month's Maxim, I noticed an article that said a meteor roughly the size of Texas has a 60-some % chance of hitting Earth this September 27th. I realize Maxim isn't necessarily the most trustworthy source in journalism, so I was wonderin if any of your astronomy buffs knew anything about this. Giddyup. They know all about it, but they've already moved to Moonbase Alpha, so they probably won't respond..... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Meathorse 0 #4 March 23, 2004 Quotea meteor roughly the size of Texas Texas is 2 dimensional. Are we being hit with a paper thin meteor? Or is its diameter as wide as Texas? How do you measure Texas' width? Where do I start with the tape measure, dammit? This is important! We must find the size of this meteor and Texas is the only unit of measurement we have!!! nacmacfeegle 0 #9 March 23, 2004 Texas might appear[url] to be relatively flat on the top, but I'm sure it goes down a fair bit. So we know roughly how wide and long Texas is, does anyone know how deep it goes? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. There was an article in a reputable New york Newspaper about it. Asteroids are what worry people, because they're large enough to cause damage. Per a list of potentially hazardous asteroids maintained by the Harvard Observatory, the only threat in September is from Toutatis, a half-mile diameter asteroid. Its closest approach will be 900,000 miles, or rougly 3 times the distance from the earth to the moon. That will happen September 29th of this year.
