help with winXP pro..

I am enjoying Windows XP Pro and using my toolbar for accessing files and programs. There is nothing on my desktop but an awesome picture and an ugly recycle bin. Is there a way to remove it ??? (I do not want to be hindered by a trash receptacle any longer.)
