Guest #4 March 24, 2004 QuoteDamn!!!! ok that was pretty freaky...and people wonder why they say dont get in and out of your car.... It can be done safely if you stay grounded, BUT-- It looks like the motorist, after entering and exiting the car again (boo-boo #1), did not discharge her static buildup by coming into contact with anything before touching the gas pump handle -- Boo-Boo #2 Then she went and touched the gas pump handle, resulting in a static discharge spark which ignited the fuel vapors coming from the fuel port vent. Boo-boo#3 Then, instead of getting the hell out of there, and finding and slamming the pump emergency off-switch, she pulled the pump handle out of the refueling port, thus almost enabling the ignited fumes to get down the fuel pipe (boo-boo#4). Fortunately, modern cars have a metal flap that closes the fuel pipe when the pump head is removed... If it hadn't been for that little piece of round metal and a spring, she would have been incinerated. She should thank her lucky stars and the engineer who designed that closing flap... mh ."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." ACMESkydiver 0 #7 March 24, 2004 OMG!!! I seriously thought that was just an urban legend thing! I always get back in my truck (Well crimany it's almost a 30 gallon tank and takes a while..) but I DO always touch metal before going back to the pump...eesh!! ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. Guest #10 March 24, 2004 QuoteI seriously thought that was just an urban legend thing! Nope - it's no legend. Cars really should have grounding straps, and gas stations should have grounding clips for cars (like the airplane pumps and fuel trucks do, and AFAIK their use is mandatory), but that's not the way it is... mh ."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."
