Anybody here use Bittorrent?

Recommended Posts

Who here uses it and it works good? I just got it a few days ago (The ABC client) and it works ok but my download speeds suck on it.
I have cable, and on direct connect I can get like 100 kb/s, but maybe only 10 kb/s on bittorrent...

is there a faster, better client out there? (and one that doesn't stop responding every few hours?)

or is there a way to tweak it to get better download speeds? Should i have a low upload or high upload limit? change the port numbers?

I use it and i have a cable connection too. the downloads are slow due it being a new medium for file sharing but i have found out the quality of the downloads are better(I.E no viruses as of yet)
but before you run the program run a virus scan on the file. as for the stopping responding that could be due to the people you are downloading from turnning the torrent off or shutting down their computer.
if my calculations are correct SLINKY + ESCULATOR = EVERLASTING FUN

not sure what you mean by ABC client, but I use this one

Speed is kinda weird when it comes to bit torrent, it's all in how bittorrent actually distributes files. If a torrent is relatively new and a lot of people are on it, you can get good speed, most people are pretty good about leaving the torrent open for a little while to make sure others can finish. But after some time passes they all kinda fizzle and leave some people with incomplete downloads. If a bunch of people sit around with incomplete downloads you'll all just slowly download from each other and never finish the file.

The key, I suppose, is just being able to get on torrents while they are on the upswing.

Yea i use the abc client as well. Your download speeds are directly affected by how many people are downloading the same file at the same time. Since its not just one file everyone downloads the more people who are connected the more sources you have to download from and the faster you can get it.

If you aren't behind a firewall or router etc ports won't matter. If you are you'll need to map the port range that abc is set to use (file -> abc preferences-> Min/Max port)

as far as uploading goes, i believe there is some functionality built in that supposedly throttles your download based on your upload (maybe % capacity used instead of your overall speed) If it doesn't hurt you let the upload go at max, you'll just be helping other people get it faster.

Hope this helps.
