Ever just get tired of it??

So do you? Lately i have not even wnated to go to the dz. I have a tandem rating that i don't even have the desire to use. I haven't done a coach jump is over 5 months. I don't look forward to jumping, i don't get excited by seeing pictures here, or reading articles. I don't have as many jumps as many of you here but has anyone else been to this point. If i decide to do something, everyone watch the classifieds cause there could be a whole lotta shit for sale. [:/]

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

Yup. It happens. I've taken a few "breaks" from the sport over the years, primarily because I got burned out after making jumping my job (ie teaching, doing tandems, rigging, packing). After the last time I decided that when I jumped it would be for me and not for money. I can't jump as much now as I could when I was working for the dz but that's okay... when I do get in the air now I land with a big smile.

If you do decide to quit/take a break don't sell your gear right away. Give yourself a year or so of doing other things before making that decision if you don't need the money for other things. None of the gear you have will lose resale value sitting in your closet for 12 months. It's a major pain in the butt to buy everything again when/if you decide you're ready to jump again - and not having gear will make it easier to make the decision to never jump again.

edit to add - Want to get excited about skydiving again? Jump a wingsuit! B|

Yes, I've been there.

I did 1000 dives of FS 4 way, and was ready to drop it all.

Then I went to the US and picked up an AFF and a Tandem rating. That got me through the year, but I was facing Tandem burnout.

I got back to South Africa and continued AFF and Tandem, but was also in the National CF rotation team, which kept things fresh for another 3 years.
I realised I was doing CF cos I was good at it, not cos I really enjoyed it, so I stopped.

Cut back on the Tandem and did more AFF for a few more years, then started to freefly and do some wing suit jumps, and then dropped Tandem completely. There's a sprinkling of camera and demo jumps in there over the last 19 years too, and of course I swoop when I'm on the gear to make it worthwhile..

If you want to stop, then stop. This is too expensive and too dangerous to do if you don't want to do it..

Yes. I get tired of people trying to outdo one another. I get tired of the phoniness at dzs. I get tired of never jumping with good friends. Skydiving is like anything else in life for me....it's always more fun when I can laugh and have a good time with it with good people. Even if people aren't on a team, some people are still so competetive....like I really care if you're better than me at A, B and C.

The only real reason I'm excited about skydiving anymore is that I can't wait to go visit my friends at their little dz. That's the only real time I love skydiving. For me, it's about the people. I haven't found people I love to skydive with except at Goshen. It's not that I think people elsewhere suck, it's just that I don't click as well with anyone else.

But, I really am sick of everyone trying to outdo everyone else. Really...you being able to do a 10-pt 4-way, flip on your head, make dinner all at the same time doesn't do much for me. It doesn't make you a better person.

Sorry for the rant. I don't have that many jumps, but I feel the same.

I tried that, Tamer laughed at me cause i suck:D

Well he sucks too then

Seriously though - doing something different and just for fun might reignite your passion for jumping. Getting away from your home dz to do it may help too.

Take a break, but don't sell your gear just yet. I don't have any ratings but I've been down that path a time or two where I just don't think about jumping all the time like I used to. I have other things I want/like to do as well. CHEER UP;)

Actually I get tired of seeing people get hurt. I think this could be one thing that might make me quit. I know people will still get hurt, but at least I won't have to watch it happen. It just makes me so sad when I see shit happen :(

I think about it all the time. One of my best friends gear is in my closet for sale.

When our teammate bounced in 2002 it pretty much ended his desire to jump anymore. He did finish the year as a tribute. But he gave it all up after 3500 jumps.

Derrick just quit.

It happens all the time.

Look around the DZ...Half those people will not be there in 5 years.

If you are not enjoying it...Try something new...It MIGHT rekindle the desire.

If not then there might be other issues you need to deal with.

If it's Fear and you have decided deep down that its just not worth the risk anymore...Then you are done. No amount of new things will over come that fear.

If you don't want to do it.. Don't the sport is to dangerous to be taken lightly.

I quit for 12-13 years, and was sporadic before then. My reasons were different, but the effect was the same -- it wasn't worth the impact on the rest of my life for that time.

I completely agree with the "don't sell your gear" thing unless you make a definitive decision to QUIT, as opposed to simply not jumping. I still had mine, and was able to jump it while I looked around for current gear that was right for me.

The earth won't stop turning if you don't jump; if you have other interesting things in your life, well, maybe you don't have a skydiving-shaped hole in it right now.

Just a quick question...

Did someone you care about get hurt/killed?

Did you see an injury?

Somebody told me once that I was never gonna be a real skydiver until a live at the dropzone and make it my full time job, that right now, I was just a weekend skydiver.
I really gave it a though and realize that life is about balance skydive is my passion but I also enjoy my job, right now I have balance, thats what's important to me, I guess grass will be always greener on the other side of the fence.

This seems to be what happens the most. I have had to force myself to take a weekend off of working at the DZ and only make "fun" jumps. I have been close to that point myself and it is because you see all your friends making the cool jumps you want to be on, but instead you have to go and film a student. Dont get me wrong I enjoy every jump I make, But some more than others.... [:/]

hey man I have had that feeling more than once. I'm the club's president/DZ manager. I pretty much do everything and then some around the club and dz. Am always there to open shop, am always the last to leave and do paperwork. Answer all the emails, get bitched at, am sometimes the only instructor/coach at the dz, only person to show up on time etc. Some days I just wish I was a normal skydiver, someone who just showed up whenever I wanted to and magically manifest was open, the planes were pulled out and I just sign-up for a load... This will never happen because I am dedicated to the sport and won't let anything happen to the club. What keeps me in are the videos and students who stick around. I just taught a class 2 weekends agoe and then had 5 tandem videos as well. Because of the season I hadn't done a tandem video in some time. The first one kinda sucked, the 2nd one kicked ass and made the rest of the day for me. Then one of my students stuck around, made a 2nd jump, learned how to pack, helped pull the planes in and then stuck around and made sure there wasn't anything else he could do. Then the next weekend he showed back up, made 3 more jumps, already knows how to pack, has built a website for himself and his skydiving activities and is constantly active with learning. For that reason I enjoy still being around even when I don't feel like I want to. The students who remind me of me when I was learning and remembering how the instructors were with me.

I don't know man, i'd say just get back out there and try to find something about the sport you love. try a new discipline, jump with some new people, have them challange you more maybe

just my opinion

Skydiving full time definitely did it for me. Worked full time at a DZ rigging and doing video for about 6-7 years I guess. Was also going to school part time.

When I went to the real world I took a solid year off w/o a single jump. Did not miss it. Went out and got back in a video loop and had a fricken blast, but now the main thing was hanging out with good friends and having a good time. That is still my focus.

People look at you like you are crazy for being into other things... I just wanna tell 'em to STFU and come talk to me when their sole source of income for 7 years was skydiving...

I will prolly never be as passionate as I once was. The days of "ohmyfuckinggod its sunny and I have a spare hour I BETTER GET TO THE DZ BECAUSE THEY ARE HAVING FUN W/O ME!!!" are long gone.

People who say try new things are right. I would like to focus on swooping at a competitive level and maybe birdman stuff in the future...

Just some thoughts on my favorite subject - ME!

The longer I'm in this sport (and industry), the more I realize how true the above words are.

Do I miss that feeling of obsession? Kind of. But I've found that there are lots of fun things to do on a beautiful day that don't involve parachutes - and doing those things makes me appreciate my jumps that much more.

Amen.

I love skydiving and still a little scared of it with only around 110 jumps. I make excuses not to jump sometimes because of that fear but you know sometimes I can't spend every fin weekend at the dropzone. I have this little thing with four walls and a roof and a huge yard called a house.... and those take a huge amount of work. I have 3 dogs. I love them and dont want to leave them alone all the freaking time. and million other things I need to do every week. I am basically a two weekend a month skydiver. I know my skill level won't go up as fast as others but oh well...
It is also financial... I can't make 10 jumps a weekend. That = $800 a month.. aint gonna happen.
Why do some people have such a hard time with this?

I only have 50 jumps (49 last year) and have not jumped since mid October. I'm the opposite I guess, I can't wait to get back in the air. Hopefully within the next couple of weeks that will happen. Maybe you do just need a break. How long have you been jumping and have you ever had a break in that time? You may regret selling your gear in the future but you should do whatever you think you must. Hope you get the passion back.:)
