chuteless 1 #4 March 30, 2004 What a sad story. I knew a man who intentionally crashed his AT-6 during an airshow. He too had cancer. What a loss of one absolutely fabulous man, a real great guy. This world sure can be hard to live in. Bill Cole D-
jdog 0 #5 March 30, 2004 So last night I was turning a right final for 24R at Gillespie. Flying the Decathlon. Well there is a Stearman on about a 1/2 mile final for 24L (the parallel runway). All of the sudden we here on the radio "This is an Emergency! This guy is trying to jump out of my airplane without a parachute!!!" Then a couple seconds later: "He just jumped! I tried to hold on to him and stop him but I couldn't!!!" Well, I was thinking these guys are practicing an air show comedy act. Matt in the back seat starts saying "look, look, look!" I had already seen the Stearman, so I started scanning for other traffic thinking we were about to have a mid-air collision..... but Matt watched the passenger jump out of the Stearman and go all the way in behind a house. About 600 feet of freefall, in a stand up apparently! Matt later said he thought they were joking at first too, but then he thought no pilot would ever say it was an 'emergency' if it really wasn't. We ended up going around the pattern. The next thing the Stearman guy said was, " some one needs to get the Sheriff over to my hanger, that guy's son is waiting for him there...." I was kind of pissed that I missed it. It was not like a skydiver going in, because this guy meant to.
weegegirl 2 #6 March 30, 2004 whoa! no shit, there i was.... wow, man. i don't know if i could ever get that visual out of my head. that is a spectacular (not in a good way) way to go. and yes... poor pilot.
themitchyone 0 #7 March 30, 2004 IMO, that was unconscionable of this man to endanger and traumatize the pilot as well as people on the ground. Fortunately no one was injured."If the Bible has taught us nothing else, and it hasn't, it's that girls should stick to girl's sports such as hot oil wrestling and foxy boxing." - Homer Simpson
