Any Firefighters/EMT-Paramedics out there?

Have you noticed this? How many in your station or company will to jump or in some cases, even fly? The reason I ask is that my fellow firefighters here in Baltimore County seem to have a serious contradiction in their bravery. They (we) will, without hesitation, respond through unpredictable and very dangerous vehicle traffic, to get to a scene where a hazard has occurred. They will then, again without hesitation, enter and try to control this scene. Keep in mind that, for example, in the case of a house or building fire, they know nothing about the stability of the structure, the degree of damage and the time frame of how long an operation might be able to be sustained in the hazard area. Yet these same people think skydiving, with its safety standards, planning and rehearsal, is a reckless endeavor. I can't quite reconcile this. What do you think?

Retired fire Capt. 15 years as a Para Medic. For my first jump course, 14 signed up and 5 showed up. I am was the only one to make 2 jumps. Fighting Fire is much easier that learning to jump.

I hear ya there. Almost no one from my department will come out and try a jump. Although it was the stories from a fellow firefighters tandem that sparked my interest in the first place.

EMT, There's a couple I work with that wanna jump. One that might actually do it, but most say no friggin way. Kinda seems to be about the same as the general population that I have talked to about it.

Speaking of firefighters...

Just a couple days ago something peaked my interest in becoming a firefighter. Initially I think it was passing by a Smoke Jumper training center in montana...I know smoke jumping is a hard profession to get into and I don't plan to become a firefighter just to get there. I'm just interested in firefighting in general. Got any tips? I was thinking I would work on getting into better shape, and put in an app to become a volunteer firefighter and do that for a while. See how I like it and go from there. But any tips from you guys would be very much appreciated.

I have 6 years with a combination department as a career firefighter. EMT-B certified. I can't talk anyone person into even a tandem, but, those stupid dipshit vollies seem to try to kill themselves on a regular basis. Even our vollie Deputy Cheif likes to stand in the smoke of a meth lab house fire without an airpack. And he calls me stupid for jumping. Morons....

FireFighter won't get a cat out of a tree. Have you ever seen the skeleton of a cat in a tree. When they get hungry they will come down.

FF/Instructor 2/ Officer 2/ EMT/ Search and rescue diver. I am trying to get 3 of them to come so far 1 still wants to come, and the other says he is still trying to talk himself out of it and the third said after thinking about it hell no. Don't worry I remind them every time how I think about their manhood if they don't do it.

I actually said that to someone. She looked at me as if I was evil itself. I said more or less the same thing to an inDUHvidual who called us out after her BIRD was "stuck" in a tree. (Never dawned on her that being in a tree is not a problem for a bird. Moron climbed up about 50 ft, bird flew away, she couldn't make it back down. We had to pluck her out of the tree. Never did see the bird.)
