Kiki 0 #1 April 6, 2004 Well I know this isn't too incredibly important to ya'll but I need some advice on pulling or learning to pull your rip cord. Im still on static line and Im getting taught how to do it, however I always seem to pull to late and by the time i do my parasute has been pulled any advice from ya'll would be helpful thank you so much. wmw999 2,589 #2 April 6, 2004 You can't beat the static line unless you're too fast. But beating the static line entirely isn't part of graduating to freefall, either. If you're standing up and under an open canopy when you reach in for the ripcord, that's too slow. But a steady count should have you reaching in to pull while the main is being pulled out, and opening shock might or might not beat you to it. Concentrate on keeping your count and rhythm, if you try to hurry too much you're more likely to go unstable. I'm surmising this in part; I jumpmastered a lot of students on rounds, but I'll admit I haven't JM'd a student on a static-lined square. And have fun jumping -- what's important to you is worth asking! Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
zulu 0 #3 April 6, 2004 Kiki, PRCP is definatley a must. However you will get it with repetition. As you leave the plane focuse on getting the practice rip cord. Dont worry about the falling. Focus on arching your body, reaching for the rip cord, pull, and check. If its fear that is causing you to hesitate, dont worry, FEAR is NORMAL!! belive me I know. Practice in front of the mirror and watch yourself to critique yourself. You will see what corrections need to be made and correct it. Hope this helps zulu
AggieDave 6 #4 April 6, 2004 "Ready, set, go! Arch-1000 Reach-1000 Pull-1000" Just say that and go, its a good smooth tempo, since you want to be smooth. Most likely you won't beat the S/L, which is good, since if you were, you'd be really rushing. Still pull the ripcord, though, since that's the point and that's what the instructor is looking for (well, that and a good arch, etc). Don't let it worry you, you'll get it!--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

livendive 8 #6 April 6, 2004 As others have said, you don't have to beat the static line. Just follow the count your instructor has taught you. You may want try yelling the count, which might help you keep up with it (in addition to proving to your JM that you ARE doing the count) . Then remember to stick with what you are doing while the parachute is opening. The opening shock may shake your arms a bit while you're reaching, but stick with it. Waiting for everything to settle down again before reaching in to pull will likely result in failing the jump. That said, understand that different dropzones have different counts, different handle locations, different static line lengths, and possibly even different expectations, so remember to run any advice you receive here (or anywhere else) past your instructor before using it. More than likely we'll get really close, but there's always a chance that your DZ does things slightly differently than ours do. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!"
