dropdeded 0 #1 April 6, 2004 Got a big African Cichlid and Im pretty sure the little one is also a Cichlid. These fish have been in a tank together for over a year. The big one has taken to bullying the little one constantly. I know its gonna kill it if it gets a hold of it. Its already getting marked up pretty bad. Which one would you keep? dropdeded------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -

Gawain 0 #4 April 6, 2004 How about letting the big one continue to bully the little one and just seeing what happens? That's always an option...if you're so inclined... So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! Kid_Icarus 0 #8 April 6, 2004 I just had to do the same thing. I'd trade in the big one to the pet store for another smaller one, maybe of the same size as the one you have now. Usually it's a size thing, but sometimes fish are just mean. ________________________________________ "What What.....

Yoshi 0 #10 April 6, 2004 cichlids are very aggressive by nature. what kind are they? pink convict? boisani (sp?) ??? you can try to put more stuff in the tank that the smaller one can hide behind... try looking at some live plants.. they work well for smaller fish to hide in and "flow" better with the waters movement... you might also looka t getting a few more that are med sized. make sure you get with a knowledgeable sales person on the cichlids because not all cichlids will get along with eachother. what size tank are they in? what kind? and what size are they now? (my brother use to own a pet store and I delt allot with the exotic freshwater and saltwater fish, so I hope this may help a little. they are also trying to establish thier territory. so mixing up the decorations inside can do one of two things.. it could help as the terrirory would constantly be changing, or it could make it worse due to the bigger one constantly wanting to fight for new territory. I suggest make a few small changes in the decorations in the tank and observe the behavior...if its worse then stop..if better then move more stuff around..._________________________________________ this space for rent. dropdeded 0 #13 April 6, 2004 It was kinda like a "rescue" attempt on my part. My room mate had em in a big tank for a long time. Got tired of them tearing stuff up and killing anything small that he put in so My sister said she would take em. Went to her house and she had em in an almost empty tank with about 8 inches of water. No filter, no bubble thingy, nuthin. So, I went down, spent 70 bucks on a small 10 gallon tank with filter and bubble thingy. Im thinkin the tank is probably way too small and the fish aint diggin life right now even though it is 100% better than it was at my sisters. I've had them just over a week, maybe he's goin stir crazy. Fuck, I dont know, if the pet store will take him its probably the best but I didnt think they would take a fish from just anyone (possibility of disease?). I've never seen a pissed off fish before, its really quite entertaining dropdeded------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -
happythoughts 0 #14 April 6, 2004 I had that problem with dogs. The big one bullying the little one. The shock collar idea may be counter-productive though. "Dammit, he's kicking my ass and shocking me now..."

jdhill 0 #16 April 6, 2004 A lot of pet stores will take the fish, and put them in a quarenteen tank, to prevent diseases from infecting other fish... beter to take them to a fish shop, than a petsmart... they will be better equiped to take good care of them. Yoshi 0 #17 April 6, 2004 I would say a 10gallon tank is prob on the small side. for cichlids a 20 (long) would be good for about 3-4 of them. you have to think about 1 gallon of water per .5-1 inch of fish. that is good rule anyways. the space and finally being able to see may be why they are a little testy. you also may want to try over feeding them for a little while (be sure to do some water changes to keep the amonia levels manageable, and NEVER to a 100% water change. when cleaning the tank jsut do 20-30% at a time taking out water and putting new in (this allows the bacteria..a good thing.. to stay at a level to eat the waste which turns it into nitrites/nitrates, and amonia... and keeping the system balanced and healthier)... I would say if you try over feeding jsut a little and do 20% water changes every 2 weeks for a couple months and move the decorations around once a week or two it may keep them busy enought to leave eachother alone..._________________________________________ this space for rent. tigra 0 #18 April 6, 2004 I had a similar problem with an aggressive goldfish. Now he's in a 12 gallon tank he shares with an algae eater. They're both pretty big and semi aggressive, but get along OK. Too bad he was such an badass, or else he could be in a nice 55 gallon tank with the goldfish he was picking on! SniperCJ 0 #19 April 6, 2004 Send me the big one. I have 2 cichlid tanks, 100 gal and 48 gal. I have a couple that'll teach him some manners. On the other hand, take the big one to the fish store and trade him in on a couple smaller ones so the small fish will be king for a while.
