I'm getting laid off :(

Recommended Posts

Rumors have been going around that they're shutting down our center and outsourcing to India. The rumor is true and we will all be getting laid off. I live in a college town and getting paid what I do to work here is hard to find... I can't support myself on just skydiving (although I wish I could) unless I did 20 tandems a month (not possible) So I guess I might have to go back to Burger King or something:S

I don't disagree with outsourcing, but everyone knows that the call centers in India SUCK and they can never understand your problem. The company is going to end up losing more costumers than gaining, oh wait, there is a year contract so I guess people are just stuck...

I don't even feel like coming into work anymore, what's the point? Why do I have to put up with the bs, people yelling at me, complaining etc when it doesn't matter. They're putting close to 200 people out of work so now the tech jobs, what little there are around here, are going to be flooded

What a Monday[:/]

Dude, I feel ya, Ive been through the same.

Then I thought about it and realized something.
I can earn money the rest of my life at a job, letting people control when I work, when I sleep, What I eat, what i drive etc etc etc.

Or I can open a business and make my own rules. In today's society that is the way to go.

I was a raftguide in CO, and had a guy on my boat, and through talking, I learned he had a house in FL, NC, and CA. He was flying out the next day to go buy his wife an island in the Honduras.
I was like. DUDE, tell me how you did this!!

He told me.. go read RICH DAD POOR DAD - Robert Kiyosaki. So I tell you now, go read it! It'll change your life!

Thanks for the advice. My dad kinda did the same thing you talked about. He got laid off right after we found out i was going to be a big brother. They opened up a business in Brazil and are now the largest of it's kind. I'm gonna go apply at the liquor store around the corner. Garaunteed to have ATLEAST Sundays off to skydive that way:P

I got laid off in November. I don't know if you're getting any severance, but if so, combining it with unemployment can result in a pretty cool situation. For me, it worked out like this...
- I didn't have to go to work for two months
- I got sixteen weeks salary (total from various sources) to spend in those two months
- I got a new job doing more interesting work, closer to home, for 35 percent more than I was previously earning

Suffice it to say getting laid off was one of the best things that's happened to me in my career. I hope it turns out similarly well for you.

Don't count on it. I live in eastern Kansas and the liquor stores down this way are fighting to be open on Sundays to be able to compete with Missouri stores. As they succeed, as they are, I think you will see stores in adjacent counties wanting to be open on Sundays in order to compete with them.

I intend to live forever -- so far, so good.

Chris,

I'm sorry to hear about that. It sucks. :( But I know it will all work out in the end . . . You'll find something, and if not, starting a business sounds like a great idea! :)
Oh, but if you're gonna work in a liquor store, don't get trashed any night before you have to go in. Try having a mad hangover and looking at bottle after bottle of vodka without puking . . . it's hard. :D

Sorry to hear that Kansas...I got my pink slip too, albeit a lil' ways out. :(

You'll pull through! It'll end up better than if you would have stayed with them. TRUST me! :)always worked that way for me.

After 2 years they bring it back and announce that they did it because "the customers wanted it". Like they care.

Here is the process:
There is short-term expense (payroll) and long-term debt (pensions). Pensions directly affect how Wall Street values your company stock. Too much long-term debt affects its future value.

They set a term of 7 years to get vested in your pension program.
They lay you off after 4 1/2 years.
They outsource the call center to India or internally.
Debt is now short-term, not long-term. Plus, US call center employees make $10 an hour, in India it's $1.35.
No long-term debt, 1/6th the short-term expense.

Some companies outsource to other US companies to reduce their pension benefits. AOL used to, UPS still does.

A company can afford to pay expensive layoff premiums like 4 months pay easily. The company recoups the amount in less than 2 years.

Sounds like you need a skydiving road trip to clear your head!

Tech job? Start filling out resume stuff on Monster.com etc, the Texas market is slim right now, but still better then a lot of other states. Especially in the Dallas/Houston/austin areas.

Ok, I am computer idiot, but wouldn't it be cool if you led someone to completely destroy their unit, so the next guys would have tons of fun trying to explain how to fix it, in Indianamericanenglishcomputereze.....

Hey Chris,
Sorry to hear about your situation. I'd love to say that "when one door closes, another opens.." but I understand that doesn't make you feel any better.[:/] I just closed my own door last week. It's time for me to re-evaluate who, where and what I want to be..and perhaps this is your time to do the same. There is a plan for you and one day, you'll look back and think to yourself "wow, what a bumpy road! Whew, glad that's over!" Stay confident as you are valuable and irreplacable to the right company! Hang in there.
K

it has been confirmed, i will be a bum here shortly. Any job I take will be a 25% pay cut, and when you're a poor college student, making $200 less a month working the same hours SUCKS BALLS

so here's the deal. If you are thinking of getting SBC YAHOO! dsl, don't!!! The are shipping 600 jobs overseas and putting skydivers out of jumps.

I'm protesting:P YAHOO SUCKS!

It's a great book. Def. read it for an uplift if nothing else. I hope your situation turns out for the better. The liquor store would be nice for Sun's off to jump.

Best of luck!

I'm in the middle of doing that right now. I'm happy with my current job it's just that they are making me live in Cleveland, OH. If you haven't been here.....don't come.......it SUCKS ASS. After a year of this hell hole I'm considering quitting just to get out!

That stinks Chris! At least they aren't making you train your replacement. Read an article about that the other day in USA Today. Weren't you going to move to Florida anyway? Here's your excuse! B|
