Within 150 days, I will be

Recommended Posts

Fired - that's right; my job is being outsourced to Dallas, TX.

Grrr.... Exactly one year ago, I was making plans to move to Houston. But, it didn't happen. Now, my job is moving there & I'm not - grrr.

I've known this as a secret for months, but now it's public knowledge & so I can beef about it on a public forum.

It does suck, if there is any solice, it's in the fact that I'm not alone.

But sometimes I wonder if God isn't playing a cruel trick on me. Like, ok - you wanted to move there when you hated life in Chicago, now that life's great, you love your friends, have a super man, things are under control - NOW, now you have a job somewhere else.

A replacement job - nope [:/].
Well, there are a few entry level options, all paying bout $15k less than I have to make to pay my bills.

My other prob is that I don't like being in finance, but that's where all my experience is from.

All I can hope is that they give me severence. It'd be nice to have a more narrow time frame. 150 days is mid-September, but it could happen anytime between now & then B|.

Well then..........this is the PERFECT opportunity to do something else. Don't dwell on the bad. This is an opportunity....use it.

I know, I know, thank you so much for the reinforcement!!

I just know that I won't be able to pay my bills & have fun if I go back to entry level in those type of jobs.

Crazy as it may seem, I really want to do some type of building work. Be it on a construction sight, woodwork or in wearhouse organization.... i just dunno.

It is an opportunity - just a very scary one.

[shankin in my boots]:)
I had the world open to me after HS - coulda gone anywhere - I chose finance & Chicago. after College, a big portion of the world was open to me & I was scared - I chose finance in Chicago.

Now I hate finance, but Chicago has my heart; And so the world is very small.

But they say that everytime a door is close another one is open. I just hope that I did not stare @ the closed door so long that I missed the open ones.

Good Grief Erica!

They're giving you 5 monthes notice, and at least some severance. You're highly skilled in a growing industry. This sounds like a great opportunity! I bet you get a raise when you find your new job.

If it makes you feel any better I have made 2 MAJOR jumps since Dec 2000. First I got out of the military after 10 years. Pretty scary but I had a plan to work with computers. Got a certification AND a job making decent money within 1 1/2 months of seriously starting my search. That job paid the bills and allowed me to skydive regularly for 2 years. Got tired of it and working in an office so I quit to open my own business. Did that for about 3 weeks and it was really starting to get along but someone called me for a job. Since taking the job would help my business out when I go back to it I did. That was a little over a year ago and I'm now considering leaving the job to go back to my business. That will be a BIG step because I have a GOOD job that pays well and has KICK ASS retirement. However......I'm working for someone else and living in a place that I hate. Unless I get a transfer back to Atlanta I'm outta here! ;) Just take care of #1 and remember what you really want out of life. It's out there! B|

PS.....It really started to bug me when after about 1 month of taking this govt job I was getting emails with offers of contracts for my company. I had to turn them down. [:/]

WOW - those are big steps!! Congrats on gettin your own company up & running. Sounds like hard work put to good use. I believe it'd be frustraiting to be told what to do and where to be after being your own boss. I wish I had that much direction in my life.

Andy, I'm getting up to 5 months notice - they could let me go tomorrow. I'm "probably" getting severence, but there's a good chance it won't come through.
It is a growing industry - but I hate working in it. My entire educational career lands me here (even in HS, I took business classes rather than art, shop or other core classes) and now - I want out.

Hey, at least you know what you no longer want, and that leaves the world open for possibilities...Take advantage of it...look into other fields, and see if your skills can correspond in some way...I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do...!:)B|

~R+R:)...I finally figured out what I wanted...it has only taken a semester off of school...and a serious chat with the parental units...So I know how you feel...:S

Well.....lets look at reality though. In those 3 weeks I brought in a grand total of $100. Of course I spent that last week skydiving at Z Hills. :D It was slow going at first but it was picking up. It just took time to build clients.

Sounds like someone that is VERY well prepared to own their own business. ;)

Perhaps, but I don't want to, I want to run someone else's business.

ACME - there are too many of us. if not for buying a jump package over winter, I wouldn't be able to jump this summer - I simply don't know how people do it

Clay - it's that, depending on finding people to pay me that keeps me from anything commission based - I couldn't sell a heater in Alaska :D, let alone my own company.

I've looked into being a counselor @ a camp for children that would otherwise go to juvie, teaching (math), going to law school, joining the peace corp & finally going back to school for architecture. I've briefly looked into working to be a job site foreman (would that be forewoman?) and even into construction (housing).

None of the tallents I've built (other than arguing) will help me in any of these - I'm desk trained, not life trained. My parents have point blank told me that I can not move back home or even store my furniture @ their place for any reason, not for going to school, moving onto a campsite or going into the corp.
I could sell my stuff & go to school, but then Mr. Bank One, Citibank & MBNA still want their monthly payments. And the student loan banks will only hold off as long as I'm adding more debt onto their books, that's counting on the fact that they'd even lend me more money (ha).

Anyway, things will be fine, I can always be a waitress & work a second job @ the mall or something.

Just last night I was talking to a friend who mentioned how much cash he had made selling advertising. I said...."I couldn't sell bottles of water in the Iraqi desert." Funny thing is......I have gotten pretty good at selling myself and my business cause it's something I KNOW and enjoy doing. Find that and selling is easy.

Yup, lawyer - I'd love to be one, just not sure which kind.

I could sell Honda's, but would pull all my hair out & have permanent acne from the stress of commission living.

I just LOVE to hear people success stories - it really helps!! And they're a great place for ideas on survival.
