Would you rather lose your mind or body?

Recommended Posts

Which do you think is worse? Would you rather lose your mind when you're older and be that crazy old person talking about how they're going on a spaceship, or would you rather lose motor functions and have to have someone else doing everything for you?

I'd rather lose my mind first. I don't want to have someone else clean my bedpans, feed me, etc and be fully aware of what's going on.

both. i definitely wouldnt want to live knowing i cant do jackshit with myself, but i also dont wanna be that crazy ole lunatic that has no idea where he is, so if it came down to it, i'd want to lose both my mind and body at the same time. walla. or, i could just die. it'd be cheaper. :D

I probably rather lose motor functions.
I've seen people lose their minds, both family as well as a friend's family. It might be better for you as a person to lose your mind, but I know for the family it is ten times harder if you would.

It's very tough walking into someone's house and they don't even recognize you anymore.

Can I just die when I'm 50 and not risk dealing with either? :P

If I had to choose, I would rather lose my body because of how hard on a family it is when you lose your mind. My grandmother has dementia, has no idea who she is or who anyone else is. She usually smiles when she sees me, but doesn't understand why. Her motor functions are starting to dissipate now. For her sake, and the families, I hope she passes soon. It might sound morbid, but she's had her fun in life and now she's in a full time care facility with a rotted mind and a body that is falling apart. :(

I'll take option C. I'd want to die before I lost either. That way I could at least tell my family and friends that I love them and be at peace. That beats the hell out of not knowing who they are or not being able to tell them.

And if I die early in an accident *knocks on wood*, then at least I would have gone out fighting, still myself, and not just a fragment of who I once was.

I'm in complete agreement with that.

I wouldn't want to lose my body first because it would make me depressed. I would hate not being able to do anything. But, some of my family's lives were disrupted by things like my uncle who "wasn't all there" being lost for a day since he was confused, and he thought he had to go to Michigan City.

My great grandma couldn't walk for the last 10 years of her life. She couldn't do much but sit there. She was so depressed because she used to be such an active person, and it's not much fun to have to sit in your house all day long when it's nice out. My uncle had no clue as to what was going on the last few years of his life, but he laughed and smiled a lot (he always thought he was going to go on fancy trips like he used to do when he was young). But, because he may have signed legal documents in that state of mind, it causes problems for my family.

I'd live as a brain in a jar if I could retain my consciousness.

If that happens, we'll use your jar as a skyball so you can keep jumping... :D

Sweet! I'm putting that in my living will. That my brain be kept alive in a jar under any means necessary and that the mass of the jar with enclosed brain, in conjunction with it's drag coefficient, falls at 140mph.

I think I'd rather lose the body. The mind is a precious thing, and only the mind can determine how to react to the loss of a body.

However, you cannot talk sense into a person who, by all opinions, has lost his mind. It's a horrible thing to lose a mind and not know it. I'd rather be a quad with a good head than a mental case with a great body.

Goodness knows, I've dated a couple of nut cases with great bodies. Ask kev about this, too..;)

Mind. I can't imagine being trapped in a body that didn't work or was deteriorating. If I'm nuts, I'm like a tree in the woods that fell. Do I know that I'm nuts? Did I know that I wasn't before?

If I had to chose, then body. My mind is all I have to define me as a person. But losing either would be bad if on a big scale.. I've had relatives with senile dementia, and it's not a nice thing. Ideally I'd like to go out while I'm still in control of my senses - preferrably doing something I love!

This is spooky.

Years ago we had this exact same conversation at work. At that time my work consisted of providing physical therapy at a convalescent center (nursing home).

There were those who walked around (alzheimers) who were interesting folks to study but couldn't intellect. Their responses were automatic...like a child.

Then there were those trapped in a functionless body who's minds could count the adventures they'd been on during WWII and the like. Sharp folk.

Hard choice. Our staff was divided about 50:50 on which one we would prefer to end up like. Some just -knew- that their craziness now would convert to funny insanity later. Others picked the broken body routine.

Hard to say...
