rocketfeuille 0 #1 April 22, 2004 Hey everybody, I'm bringing my wife out to San Diego for our anniversary and was hoping to get some suggestions for a relatively nice place ($15-$25 per plate) to eat and a nice place to stay (either bed and breakfast or a nicely located hotel). Any thoughts?

billvon 3,096 #3 April 22, 2004 Hotels - can't help you there. I've stayed at a few nice ones but I have no idea what you're looking for. There are super nice ones (like the Hotel del Coronado) and several new ones downtown in the Gaslamp, but they are pricey. Near me we have the Homestead/Sorrento Mesa which is $95 a night for a studio. The Wyndham is a lot nicer for about $110 a night. Restaraunts - depends on what kind of food you are looking for. Fidel's in Solana Beach. Best Mexican food in San Diego. Epazote's in Del Mar. Best margaritas and one of the best views. The Marine Room in La Jolla. Best brunch, another one of the best views. Pizza Port. Good place to hang out and has live music on occasion. Dick's Last Resort in the Gaslamp. Rude waitresses, lots of things being thrown, greasy food, but a San Diego fixture. Rock Bottom and Karl Strauss - two good brew pubs. Ballast Point Brewery - not a restaraunt per se but they have great beer. Try the Yellowtail. airtwardo 7 #4 April 22, 2004 Treat her to the 'Del' !! Call as far ahead as you possibly can, and ask about any 'specials' they may have going. It's a really neat place, and you can get a room there for a comparable price of any nice hotel...by calling way ahead. We stay there often...(airline discount) but even without, you can get a nice room for 100-150 a night. Just do eat there! That's where they rake it to ya! Like Bill says...head to the Gass Lamp Quarter for supper! Enjoy and Congrats! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
skyyhi 0 #5 April 22, 2004 Sorry that I don't know much about food here in San Diego. . .A lot of people here tell me they like to go to La Jolla for good food. The Torrey Pines Lodge is a beautiful hotel and they have a great restaurant inside overlooking the golf course. We take clients there a lot and they love it. It is quite pricey though. If you want more reasonable, stay at one of the name hotels in the downtown or Seaport Village areas (course, only slightly more reasonable. . .).________________________________________ Take risks not to escape life… but to prevent life from escaping. ~ A bumper sticker at the DZ FGF #6 Darcy

jdog 0 #10 April 22, 2004 If you like sushi the best value is Niban on Clairmont Mesa Boulevard - awesome fish and great prices. If you want a fancy (expensive) sushi resturant check out Zen Bu in La Jolla or Cafe Japengo across from the Hyatt in UTC. Lotus Thai on 6th Avenue in Hillcrest is awesome. Great food and prices, beautiful restuarant. Saffron on India St. is a good Thai place for lunch. For an expensive steak house, Flemmings is also across from the Hyatt in UTC. JohnnyD 0 #11 April 22, 2004 what kind of food are you interested in? where in San Diego will you be staying? will you have your own transportation? - i liked to take friends from out of town to the Kansas City Barbeque. Its a crappy bar downtown and also where they filmed the crappy bar scenes in Top Gun. Reasonable prices and you can get a free pitcher for putting your (wife's) bra on the ceiling fan. - Side note: The first time I ever went there was with my mom for my aunt's birthday. I am scarred for life.

If you _really_ like sushi you can't beat Todai - all you can eat sushi for $24. Todai sushi sucks. Terrible, one of the 3 worst in SD. If you have to have all you can eat sushi at a huge nasty buffet, Onami is edible and is right across the freeway. I would only go there for lunch though as it is only $13. If you want all you can eat, go to a place like Saskas in Mission Beach. Even my friend who thinks Denny's has good food will not eat at Todai anymore. AirMail 0 #14 April 22, 2004 I like Las Olas in Cardiff for fish tacos. Can't remember the name of the B&B I stayed at in SD. It was near downtown and was Victorian style. Go down to south beach bar and grill in ocean beach for good fish tacos and good beer. Rubio's is way too commercialized.
