billvon 3,108 #1 April 26, 2004 I just got hold of a CDMA 1x EVDO PC card for my laptop. From anywhere in San Diego I can get 400-500kbps connection speeds. (For reference, dialup is 50kbps at the very best and a DSL line can hit 1500kbps.) Cool, especially since I worked on the technology. It's expensive so far - for your typical person without connections the card is around $200 and the service is $79 a month. But that should drop as it becomes more popular. In other news, I have a few directional 2.4GHz antennas on order. Running wires for net access at Rantoul last year was so inelegant; with the antennas and two access points we should be able to get service to the DZ.com tent without too much hassle. Slappie 9 #8 April 26, 2004 Why pay for your own service when you can just piggy back on someone elses? http://www.stumbler.net/ Pretty neat shit actually. If you've never heard of "Wardriving" take sometime and do a search. There is some decent information on the subject. Laptop Netstumbler wireless nic Antena gps to mark locations You can map your whole neighborhood, or parts of your city for decent connection speeds. wildblue 7 #10 April 26, 2004 Google for 'war flying' - probably get a lot of unrelated responses, but someone actually has flown around (I think it was CA) and marked hot spots With WEP and WPA, you're going to have a harder time. For me, I'll stick with my Treo. I already have it, the data plan is only $15/month, and I can get 50-150k just about anywhere.it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality
Zenister 0 #11 May 1, 2004 Quote Besides, most people are enabling WEP now. you'd like to think so, but from where i sit at the moment i can see 5 unsecured and 1 secured network. it was even funnier last time i went thru Dallas..from the airport i could see 7-10 depending on where i sat and several had nothing preventing me from wandering around in their harddrives if i'd been so inclined... if ignorance were painful maybe people wouldnt remain so for as long as they do..____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
