for all you college students.

I've been preping myself for my return to school this fall. For this reason, I have not been around the computer as much.

I went to take my freshman placement tests (yes, FRESHMAN, at age 33) today. It's amazing seeing that stuff on paper, remembering some stuff like it 15 years ago, and beating yourself silly trying to remember how to do it. Yep, that was my math placement. I'll not be needing remedial math, but I'm not getting advanced placement either.

My English placements however... WOW. Do you realize how boring it is to sit in a desk for 45 minutes, and do NOTHING? 90 minute test, completed in 45, just as the halfway point was announced. Well, the good thing is I tested out of half of my required English credits (the maximum allowed at UW Stevens Point).

I took 3 years of German in high school, once again, 15 years ago. I picked up the test, attempted to read the first 2 questions, put it back down, and declined to take it. I'll start over, thankyouverymuch.

Anyway, R-E-S-P-E-C-T, for all you college students. That is alot of shit to remember!

I was thinking of going to college at 47, but I think I'd be laughed off campus. I'll prolly stick to home schooling myselfB|

The advantages of children at home, financial aid.

My tuituion is paid for, and I get a decent amount of loans to not make it a hardship on my family.

Honestly, when the teacher I have been working with this year started talking to me about getting my degree and returning to teach, I literally could not find a reason to say no.

Age is a matter of mind. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.

AWESOME! I'm the oldest person in my class right now (of about 150). It's fun to be in school at 38! AND, my best friend since we were 12 was just accepted to medical school. I say good for you. Hope you enjoy being back as much as I do!

Peace~

i've been considring going back to college in the future to get an undergraduate degree in engineering. Once I've done what I wanted to do as an attorney I figured it'd be nice to try - just to see if I can do it (I'd always thought I didn't have a math mind)

Good for you, RevJim. Kick ass and take some names!

You wont' be laughed off campus. You will bring a new perspective to discussion groups and your professors will ADORE you. Older students tend to study harder and your experience in life will benefit you!
I was WELL into my 30's when I went back to school and I loved every second of it and it was NOT easy. When I was handed my diploma I stood on the edge of the stage till the person before me left and I had it all to myself. Get going, Akarunway!
Rev Jim~~rock ON! Its a great time in life, huh? Congrats and enjoy the journey!~~April

My mother went back to college at age 50. She and I graduated from the same school in the same semester. Thought we'd save the family from having to sit through 2 graduation ceremonies.. :)
The only advice I can offer is to take as many night classes as you can schedule. You will find more adult students in these classes, and avoid a lot of the immaturity of the kids who dont quite get it yet.

I'm already committed to heavy class load. I have to really buckle down the first semester with 20 credits, to get them to allow me to break 22+. I'll be a full time day student, but trust me, as many night and summer semester courses I can take, I will. The sooner to the BS, the better. Yes, I chose the BS instead of the BA. I like a challenge.

Now, to figure out a way to get that BS double major....

April, you are so right. I'm getting into my 30's now, and I feel like I just hit my stride. I'm finally enjoying life, and it feels sooooo good!

Oh, yea, the school doesn't have a skydiving club.....yet

And my jump numbers are low enough to allow me to compete at College Nationals comfortably. ;)

Right on dude! Don't feel bad for being 33, you definately won't be the only one on campus. To be embarressed, you be 24 and have had been on campus off and on since you were 18, that's fairly embarressing...not that I know anything about that...

You're going to do well, older students tend to do really well, they work harder miss MUCH less class then your average fish (freshmen).

Which school?

Way to go JiM.
I left school at 15 and returned in my 30's, I did a Science degree with Biology and Marine Science as a double Major then did a post grad in teaching.
I'm now 41 years old and have been teaching 4 years.
The pay scale sucks bigtime, but the rewards were never going to be financial:)
Good luck brother.
My fist day at Uni scared the shit outa me.
400 students in a lecture theatre and me being older than the lecturer:D:D:D
You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky)

How's yours doing?

After working an ass-busting job for 10 years I decided to go to school and get my degree at 29. This month I will turn 33 and will have 5 quarters left to finish my BME. It is kinda weird being in school with kids people who were still playing with fisher price when I was serving in the Marines, but for what it is worth. It is actually easier now to get the work done.

I think this may be a result of several factors

1.) You are returning to school because yopu absolutely want to.

2.) You will realize that you actually did develope some powerful thought processes over the past 15 years and you really are smarter now than you were when you 20. You have been processing and assimilating information ever since you left high school, you just did not realize it.

3.) You know what the real world is like and so you are more motivated to succeed.

4.) You have a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw from.

5.) While the younger folks are partying you will be working to attain higher scores, and in classes with curves you will be so far ahead of the curve that even if you score a 30 you will get an A.

The list could go on, but I am glad I waited till now to go to college because I do not believe I would have doen to well if I had gone in my early twenties.

All this to say, Rev-Jim, good luck, and don't sweat it, you will do great. Enjoy the ride;).

Thanks!

I need to add, it does make it easier having the #6 midwestern college for masters a short 20-25 minute drive from home. I can go to school beyond full time, and still be able to commute daily!

Today was a good day to be alive, and tomorrow is looking even better. :)

Hey RevJim!

All I can say is YOU GO! After taking a break from going after a Marine Bio. degree in Cali (marriage, baby, divorce, etc.) I returned to school at 30 to finish it all up. This is the first time in my life I have ever had a 4.0 and I hope I can hang on to it for the next 2 weeks. At first it was sort of weird, I go to a small private university and go full time for day classes so most of the students are 18-24. Now, I absolutely like it. I have a different relationship with my profs and other students and I actually like it better than when I was in college at 19. I am more focused and understand more about myself than I did at 19. I think if I had graduated at 22 and started my career I would be screwed now. I am such a different person and it has taken me this long to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.

Take advantage of all you can. I am going to Europe with members of our criminal justice department for 2 weeks in January for about $600, the trip with everything included is $1500 and my financial aid will pay for $900 of it. I was given opportunities to TA all over Mexico, the Caribbean and Catalina Island.

The univerisity has so much to offer. Go for it! I will be glad to get my first Bachelors degree next May and I am already trying to find ways to get my second which is a semester or two longer. If not a second Bachelors then a Masters.

The nice thing about the Masters at my university is that you can do it at night one night a week and still have a real job and a family!

20 units sounds like a heavy load. Don't overdo it cause if you are on the semester system, it is a long time to be carrying 20 units B|. And if you have a family to take care of too, you need time for them and yourself.

Anyway, GOOD LUCK TO YOU!
