lawrocket 3 #1 May 3, 2004 Over the past several months, either my car or I develop a lot of static electricity. When I exit the car, I get shocked when I touch the door to close it. It's starting to piss me off. What the heck can I do to keep my car from frying my ass? I'm not one of those who is into the whole shock scene... My wife is hotter than your wife. FliegendeWolf 0 #2 May 3, 2004 On dry days, I always touch things with my key first. That way, the static electricity discharges without giving me a shock so that when I touch the object with my hand, there's no charge left to shock me.A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

Seriously, you could wear leather gloves . . . but that's weird that it started all of a sudden, when it's not even cold out. Kelly
CrazyIvan 0 #4 May 3, 2004 I hear that, I have the same problem, especially during winter time, what I do before I get out, I touch the key while still in the ignition, you'll get a little zap, but far less painful than when shutting the door __________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. I make a fist and use it to close the door. You still get shocked, but the surface area is much larger than one finger, therefore the charge density you are getting is a lot less. You'll hear it, but not feel it. Or you could just touch the windows and stay away from the metal. JumpScars remind us that the past is real
namdrib 0 #6 May 3, 2004 I feel your pain, my brotha!!! I have a pickup that I am convinced could be used as some sort of Prisoner of War Torture devise!!! Holy shit, does this thing zap the ever living piss out of me everytime I get out, winter, summer, whatever. I have come to terms with this problem and have actually gotten to where I look forward to it. It is the only excitement that I am given anymore! I know that is sad, but I feel like I have no control anymore! Blue ones!!!Unknowing attempting to take out all 4 wheeled vehicles remotely close to the landing area! Sabre2th 0 #7 May 3, 2004 They key idea works best! I do this all the time... Just make sure your finger is in contact of the metal part of the key of course, and then touch it to the car body. Sometimes you can see some serious sparks :) Nick. Those who dance, are cosidered insane by those who can't hear the music.

Nutz 0 #11 May 3, 2004 I always grab something metal on the door while I am still sitting AND have at least one foot on the ground. Then stand up while holding onto the door. That usually works. "Don't! Get! Eliminated!"

BUT: 5 star safety rating, good mileage, comfortable, and I got it as an unwind (20 percent off invoice because it had 450 miles on it) with zero financing. The reasonable car for the reasonable man who knows he has not one shred of coolness in his fat and ugly body. I know I'm not cool, so I don't even try to be. My wife is hotter than your wife. adrenalinejunki 0 #16 May 3, 2004 Before you slide your ass across the seat and build that static chrage take your hand and touch the metal on top of the door and hang on to it as you get out. This should take care of it. __________________________________________________What's the worst that can happen?
dixieskydiver 0 #17 May 3, 2004 I attended a technical conference on this (sigh) a couple of years ago. Manufacturers of automotive fabric are looking for ways to eliminate this because if you give off a static charge near gas fumes when you are pumping gas it is possible it can ignite. I learned in physics class that this is worse in the winter time or dry air (less humid) environments because the moisture dissapates the charge. Dryer sheets stop static cling by putting a little bit of chemical that holds a little moisture on your clothes to dissipate the static charge. Perhaps you could take some and rub it on your car seats...could be a temporary fix... plus you would smell fresh out of the dryer clean . freeflynick 0 #20 May 3, 2004 In the UK, grounding straps are everywhere. I too get bad-ass shocks over here in the US and have been to a few of the bigger auto-part shops but have not been able to find one. If you do find where I can get one, let me know. lawrocket 3 #25 May 5, 2004 So my car didin't shock me yesterday. Why not? Because it got tagged in the parking lot. Some old lady tried to park next to it with her Ford Explorer and failed to execute. Fortunately, my wife saw the whole thing and I've spent some time with her insurance company to get it fixed. What do we have? Dented and scratched driver's side quarter panel. Also, upon operation of the vehicle, damage to the joint where the wheel meets the axle. All in all, a pretty weird day yesterday.
