mr2mk1g 10 #1 May 6, 2004 Just got off the phone to the new Headmistress at my old high school. I’d called to see if I could organise a demo into their sports day, entirely at my own expense and without taking up any of their time. I hadn’t expected to exactly be greeted with open arms or anything but I was shocked by her reaction. She displayed what I guess are typical whuffo sentiments and initially said there was no way we could surmount the health and safety problems. I told her I was a lawyer specialising in, amongst other things, health and safety law and could guarantee that any health and safety issues would be more than adequately handled. At that she essentially came out with her real reasoning in that she could see nothing that the school could possibly gain from it. She felt that it would be stupid and dangerous and that it would be inappropriate and distasteful given the recent events in the area (school is 10 miles from the DZ where the murder enquiry is still ongoing). I was amazed that she would be so rude to me. Rather upsetting but I guess predictable in hindsight given the way whuffo’s see the sport.
vt1977 0 #2 May 6, 2004 Is there any way that this could be turned around into something positive? OK so she’s not happy to have you jump in… (seems odd – I know Headcorn Parachute Club do a jump into the local primary school every year!) but do you think she could be persuaded to let you come in and do a presentation about skydiving? There is some fantastic video footage out there of skydiving and I am sure that high school age kids would find it fascinating. It would in no way be dangerous and could not possibly get in the way of health and safety but would be a great way to educate teenagers about a very visual and exciting sport. (If she queries this, you could always point out that skydiving is recognised by the Sports Council.) Maybe if that goes well you may have better luck arranging a demo for next year? Gotta be worth a try. Vicki
mr2mk1g 10 #3 May 6, 2004 That’s a good idea. Maybe I’ll give that a shot – I’d happily go give a talk on the subject and I know our club has more than enough video to put on a great presentation. I still don’t hold out much hope for even that though. It was the way she spoke about skydiving as if she felt it was a sickening and distasteful subject that would get her in hot water with all the parents. The whole “inappropriate and distasteful” phrase she used springs to mind. Funny how those of us who knew the guy and were actually there think exactly the opposite isn’t it. Worth a stamp at least... or should I say a trip to the company franking machine...
Squeak 17 #4 May 6, 2004 Yeah show them good sensible skydiving footage like umm.... "GOOD STUFF" especially where they drop cars and couches and other crap outa planes... be sure to highlight the scene where people appear to be staning a few metres away from the impact area of one of the dropped itemsYou are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! Skyrad 0 #5 May 6, 2004 Yea, if she doesn't think it has a educational purpose you could us Skydiving to explain air preasure and Newtons laws in an exciting and practical way. Not to mention the basic priciples of flight gliding. I think that Vic's has a great idea there! When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. Lucius Annaeus Seneca
