This is kind of like a "Margin of error is plus or minus total irrelevance" kind of thing. Who gets paid for this research? Wow, never underestimate the stupidity of a bored sociologist, I guess. I'd love to see the raw research data and dig into their methods a bit.

Full Disclosure: I have both a BMW and a Porsche, but I'd screw up the bell curve for either of those.

thanks, Kris. Even so, his point is still good in that the relationship is likely correlation rather than causation. Car advertising is selling a lifestyle rather than the thing itself.

I thought it interesting that this German research firm 'discovered' that many of the top brands were German made. 77% of 83% of all people know that 50% of all decisions in this area aren't not incorrect 83% of the time with a 95% confidence interval.

The standard deviations on that must be crazy!

My girlfriend and her sister both have fairly new Porsches. One is them 35 years old, the other is 37. Neither of them are male , nor are either of them married. Both household incomes are close to 50% off that median.

They are both college graduates though, so at least they fit the demographic on that one.

First off......BMW's are nothing but status symbols. I personally love Ducati motorcycles but I would never own the new 999....to far from its heritage back from the 916,996,998 designs. The BMW is the same. It gives people great feeling of power when they can say....."I drive a BMW", same goes for a Harley, or the new Ducati. It give people a sense of worth when in fact a vehicle should give you a sense of security.

There is a sang in the automotive world that is directed towards BMW cars..."Over priced and under engineered." All M3's rolled off the lot in 99-00 were never called back yet they suffered oil pump failures and engine failures. The X5 sufferes from severe electrical problems. The car will catch on fire for no apparent reason. How has BMW handled this? They have done nothing. Not what I want in a manufactorer when I spend $50-$100K on their product.

This test just proves the theory that people are drawn to money, and that people who flaunt it are into nothing but status.

I will never own a BMW.
