jahk 0 #9 May 5, 2004 I've seen several nailgun injuries come to the OR. And I've made a few interesting observations. First, if you nail your thigh while you're kneeling or squatting, you'll fix your knee in the flexed position. Second, nailing your scrotum will probably cost you a testicle. Third, if you nail your sternum (breastbone), don't remove the nail. (Being a good construction worker, he knew when you put a nail where you don't want it, you just grab a hammer and pull it out. However, he didn't realize that the nail was plugging the hole it made in his heart.) PhreeZone 20 #10 May 5, 2004 Why? I know this one since I used to sling a Nailgun . They have a safety catch on the impact point that prevents them from being fired even with the trigger pulled in. Its really common for roofers to lay out the roll of Tar paper or for floor sheeting and hold in the trigger and just impact where they want the nail. 2-3 nails per second at a walking pace is about right for floors and 3-4 at a mild jog is perfect for tarpaper. Can do the upper row of tar paper on a roof in about 5 seconds and the lower on the walk back. A common issue is the safety catch gets stuck open so the gun starts firing until pressure on the trigger is released.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
happythoughts 0 #11 May 5, 2004 On tar paper, I alway used those small aluminum discs. Throw a handful out and have at it. There is a safety on the end of the gun. A Colt .45 has a pressure catch like that in the grip. The part that bothers me is the pic of x-ray in the link. The nails are in the back of his head and neck. Sounds a little odd. There used to be a joke about a guy with 6 bullets in his back. The sheriff wrote "Shot himself 6 times in the back with a single shot rifle. Very motivated and suicidal. Look at the pic. How did he unintentionally put 6 nails in the back of his head at that angle?
livendive 8 #12 May 5, 2004 QuoteLook at the pic. How did he unintentionally put 6 nails in the back of his head at that angle? While unlikely, it does seem possible if he was somehow working underneath it and had the trigger somehow locked in the "fire" position. As soon as it hit his head once, the recoil could be sufficient to make it bounce several times, each time firing a nail when the safety on the business end impacted his skull. happythoughts 0 #14 May 5, 2004 One shot was in the neck. How long after the first hit could someone still hold a nail gun? Usually that first twinge of pain and my attention is totally focused. "Ow...Hmmm...what should I do to prevent more pain...? Perhaps I should... ow... let... ow... go... ow... of..." See what I mean? 6 shots. Big-ass painful nails. Suicide attempt. Ducky 0 #16 May 5, 2004 Having been the victim of a nail through my thumb I know how these things can happen. One explanation for someone shooting themselves multiple times is that they were falling perhaps? i have heard of that happening and in an attempt to grab on for life instincts tell you to squeeze! I actually watched by brother slide half down a roof and through a hole 10ft. down to the floor with a running skill saw in hand. He was cutting and started to slide and never let go of the trigger. Landed falt on his back with saw above him never touching the ground. I also think the basic lack of understanding that MANY people have of power tools and general construction hazards helps me understand why my damn liability insurance is so high. Hell just last week i had to explain to a homeowner why she couldn't walk in her house why the framing crew was nailing down the roof sheathing, hmmm? Go ahead, but I wouldn't with a hardhat a good buzz and some damn good kharma! kwakSometimes your the bug, sometimes your the windshield. Sometimes your the hammer sometimes your the nail. Question is Hun, Do you wanna get hammered or do you wanna get nailed?????
livendive 8 #17 May 6, 2004 QuoteLook at the pic. How did he unintentionally put 6 nails in the back of his head at that angle? OK, from CNN: QuoteMejia, 39, was atop an unfinished home when he fell from the roof onto a co-worker who was using the nail gun, Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Mark Newlands said. The two men tried to grab each other to keep from falling, but both tumbled to the ground. At some point, the nail gun discharged and drove the nails into Mejia's head. happythoughts 0 #18 May 6, 2004 That's a logical explanation. I couldn't think of how you could shoot yourself in the back of the head. The hand position would be really awkward. So it seems that he fell on a co-worker who shot him. That makes sense.
