SpeedRacer 1 #1 May 7, 2004 I applied for long term disability insurance at work & got turned down because I was honest on the application & admitted to skydiving. F*&k. now what. Is there a way to appeal this? They gave an 800 number to call if I "should have any questions". kelel01 1 #2 May 7, 2004 You can certainly try, but you're more than likely gonna have to find an individual policy and pay through the nose for it. But if you had lied, skydiving probably would have been excluded anyway, and let's face it . . . it's probably the most likely cause of a disability for any of us. So, it would kind of be a case of "You get what you pay for." Kelly
skyyhi 0 #3 May 7, 2004 Always appeal. Insurance companies pretty much always turn down questionable claims. Most people don't appeal. If it is employer funded disability insurance and not state disability insurance the likelyhood of the appeal working is nil. With state disability insurance you just appeal, wait and see. Also ask for a copy of the policy to see if high risk activities are specifically excluded. If not you have a case.________________________________________ Take risks not to escape life… but to prevent life from escaping. ~ A bumper sticker at the DZ FGF #6 Darcy

SpeedRacer 1 #5 May 7, 2004 My brother was in a bus accident two years ago & suffered a brain injury. He's mostly better now, but thankfully he had taken out long term disability insurance on the advice of his financial advisor. So a few months ago he gave me a long talk about how I should get LTD insurance, because if I don't & I get in an accident so I can't work, my family will have to pay for my expenses. It was a real eye opener. So getting turned down for this really sucks. I wish I had known that they'd automatically refuse me if I skydive. I only skydive a few dozen times per year, but to a whuffo, that seems like a lot. Also I guess we seem to think of skydiving as a relatively normal activity, whereas I guess the whuffo world thinks we're all absolutely nuts. I guess I lost sight of that, because when I filled out the application, I was able to check "No" to all the medical & health risk problems listed, etc. So I thought they'd just look at the whole picture & make a general assessment, not kick me out based on one Yes to skydiving. I guess I underestimated the overwhelming whuffo-ness of the world. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
lawrocket 3 #6 May 7, 2004 Yeah, it's the way the insurers look at it. I'm getting insured for lots of things right now, and I haven't jumped in almost a year. That is the only thing that may help me out. See what you can do to negotiate a higher premium, or to get somethign that waives long-term disability in the event of a skydiving injury. Jib 0 #7 May 7, 2004 I have one and they even gave me 2 years of benefits for skydiving after 180 days being hurt. Beerlight 0 #8 May 7, 2004 What if you signed up for disability insurance with a company but was NOT actively jumping at the time? Then you start jumping at a later date? I don't remember anything in my new companys policy about that? yikes..... Buck
SpeedRacer 1 #9 May 7, 2004 yep, that's what I should have done. hmmmm....I'm not ACTIVELY skydiving. Right now I'm sitting in an office filling out this form. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
