Should I quit?

Recommended Posts

Allright, so I'm debating here.

I have had this job (Selling Cellphones, all carriers) since Beginning of December. I have sold a lot of phones and made allright money.

They just changed the payscale two weeks ago to make us sell a lot more to make any money.

My new manager just came in last month, and is a lot better than the previous one.

Here is my problem. I have witnessed several times how my manager have lied and misled customers to sell them something. I cannot do that. I cannot live with the fact that I screwed someone into a contract they might hate for two years. When I asked him about it, he said that he's awesome for being able to talk so much, and talk people into things. He also added that if I dont pick up quick, then I will have to go.

I talked to my fam, and they think it would be good to quit, but not before I got another job.

Personally, I got two finals left tommorow, and I want to take off somewhere, like Colorado where I was last summer, then when I am ready, come back to Kentucky and work until School starts. My parents would think this is not a good idea.

So what do you all think? I'm sick of thinking about it, and I cannot go on. HELP MEE!!!!!:S:S

I voted give some notice, then quit. Sounds like you are not really cut out for the sales jobs... which is good. Most sales jobs expect you to not necessarily lie, but sort of con your customers into thinking they are getting a much better deal than reality. Personally, I hate pesky salespeople. If you have the summer off, why don't you find a dropzone that needs some help and go work there... do manifest or pack or something. Either way, I'd be looking for your out. Good luck! :)

Always give notice...it's just common courtesy and it reflects on your personal being....But yeah you need to quit!
Of course your parents won't like the idea but take that vacation while you can...If you don't, you'll regret not doing it and ultimately blame them. Do it now before you're tied down to a career.

Exactly. I do not like doing that, its not my personality. So I think I'm going to get out, I'll put in my notice today then.

I did have packing job at Skydive the Rockies this summer, but gave it to a friend who wants to fly real bad, and I thought it would be better, the DZO owns four planes and could maybe hook him up. He offered (after talking late last night) that we could split the job. Neither of our parents would like this idea at ALL. But we could probably do it, but be bums all summer and I wont get to skydive too much. At least I'll be around it!

I'll do what I want this summer, and come back to school in the fall, summertime is mine, I'll do what my parents want for the rest, as I also see the benefit in that.

So anyone know of a good job at a cool DZ then? I would LOVE that. I can pack pretty well and would not mind manifest at all.

(I live in Lexington, KY, when you move, come to Kentucky Skydiving Center in Frankfort, or Bardstown!)

There's a sales position at the Verizon Wireless retail store in Colorado Springs available. With your experience, you would probably be very qualified for it, and, since they are not a retailer, typically do not do shady business like independent stores.

Your dilemma is indigent in telecommunications (I have background in the industry).

Typically, upper management asks the sales management to forecast the next year's sales. Sales management uses a complementary blend of quantative and qualitative methods, formalizes the forecast and submits it upstream.

Upper management reviews the forecast, has higher ambitions for capital equipment, network expansion inflation, stockholders, etc. So they ship the new and revised forecast (usually 30-50 percent higher) back down to the the Sales Management.

Sales Management reviews the new forecast and knows that it is a recipe for failure. They wind up objecting upstream, which then "brands" them as not being a "team player" which places them under the microscope for monthly reviews rather than quarterly reviews by upper management. Once a bad month hits, they begin applying pressure to the Sales Management.

Sales management usually winds up leaving or getting placed on a "improvement plan" which usually winds up in resignation or termination.

Joe Snuffy (the potential new sales manager) sees opportunity, goes to upper management and declares his ability to not only meet those numbers, but exceed them and be the new company hero. Upper management's overly aggressive numbers are now validated by the "new team player" who gets the job.

With sights on upper management, s/he must beat the numbers and begins to use every tactic on customers to make the sale, leads the sales team by fear, modifies the comp plan to increase bottom line numbers and justifies less than honorable persuasive sales strategies.

This is not consultative sales; this is hustle sales nothing less of the car sales mentality.

These people are usually a flash in the pan, can make your life miserable during the interim and usually wind up increasing sales for a little bit, then move on to find another job on the next higher rung leaving a path of destruction behind them by losing good sales people and destroying customer relationships.

In the interest of professionalism; school or not, no matter what you do, resign by giving two weeks notice.

Couldnt have been explained better... It makes perfect sense...

I sent in the letter today, after asking my dad to review it, which he did and even encouraged me to leave. So its kind of sad to see al my mates go, but it needed to be done.

I just got off the phone with my boss. He will see if he needs me in the next two weeks. If he doesn't, I'll be off to CO next week this time!

Thanx all for your concern.

If you all know of any cool DZ jobs, let me know please! I dont care too much to bum it over the summer. I just wanna jump!

While this is normally the best practice, less honorable companies may reward this professionalism by sending you out at 5pm. If you already know this to be the case, you do not have be the good guy in the equation - do what works best for you. This would be particularly true in sales where you work doesn't carry over week to week.

Well, I talked to him later and he told me that I should just leave, not worry about it. So I told him, THANX MAN!:D

But in a normal situation where they want you to stay, I do agree that you have to be professional.

Thanx all, I am now super happy that I did quit. In hindsight, I dealt with 4 screwed customers just today, and I'm very glad thats over.

That depends. If your boss is outright lieing to get customers, then he has what is coming to him (within reason). Personally, I would see if there is any trading standards equivilent who could pretend to be a customer to him and when he lies to them, stick him in jail (or at least give him a big fine!)

I have to agree with Keith (Bigun) on this one...no matter what...give notice... if you leave with notice and on good terms, past jobs can be used as a good reference for future employment.

I disagree. Just because the company is less than honorable doesn't mean you should lower your professionalism.

Even if that means getting a 2 week unpaid, unplanned vacation?

Sorry - it goes both ways. If I'm going to delay my starting date at the better new place to show proper courtesy, they shouldn't be drop kicking me out the door. If I knew that to be their policy, that 2 weeks notice becomes "end of this week."

Corporations seemed shocked in the 90s when people responded to mass layoffs in the down years by job hopping in the boom times. You reap what you sow, esp in the at-will employment states like California.

I've come back offhours past the 2 weeks for companies that treated me well. Others...well, most had the sense to not even ask.

Quit now. Don't even give them the courtesy of a notice. A company who resorts to unethical methods and expects their employees to do the same is not worth working for. They are owed nothing.

I'm morally and ethically in agreement with this statement, but having quit a shithole job last year, I found it took me another 5 months to get working again, with no unemployment in thhe meantime.

If you give them a notice with a date, stick to it. In the meantime, you're responsible for your own ethics anyway. Don't lie to anybody, don't screw anybody. And then if your manager gives you a ration about that, just tell him, "I gave you a notice as a courtesy to you. But under these circumstances, I'll just leave now." Don't forget, it isn't just your karma that can come back on you, you can be sued. And you know those rats will never defend you. Rats on a sinking ship never stick together. And you don't have to be one of them either.

There at two other DZs in Colorado. Denver Skydivers, and Mile-Hi Skydiving . Have you contact either of them for a summer job?
