Jeez been a while since I signed in hare. got 700K posts to read.

Can anyone help me with a problem im having witha friends PC.

Each time he tries to go online he is taken to a homepage that he doesent want. No matter what we try we cant get rid of the redirection to the dubious site. (even if we reset the homepage or delete all files to do with the dodgy site).

I wont post a link to the site but is contains in the title "aifind".

Does anyone know how to cure this problem?.

An adware type application (most likely a java executable from a web page) has hijacked his registry.

Try using CWShredder to evaluate/repair the registry.

Ad-Aware has been failing alot with the bowser hijackings. Try the CWShredder thing, if that fails try HijackThis http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html

either adaware as mentioned above, or spybot search and destroy.

both are good and spybot also immunes your systems against some of that crap.

I actually run both CWShredder and Lavasofts Ad-aware. great combination.

All you need to do is go into "my computer" then click on "internet options" check to see what the home page is set on and you can change it there. That is the easiest way to fix it.

Yes and no.
By changing the registry options many of these hijacking butthead mother 3%$#^#@$^ (sorry) have made it possible for the user NOT to change the home page. Some of these are CoolWebSearch (aka CoolWwwSearch, YouFindAll, White-Pages.ws). These alter the functionallity of the browser by redirecting everything to a page stored on your hard drive. If you delete the file then your browser goes nowhere.

Is this another reason to install Mozilla? Doesn't work for every site (damn lazy developers!) but for the bulk of the time it's nice not having to worry about popups and there is a nice thin client out that discarded most of the fluff.
