weegegirl 2 #1 May 11, 2004 update! my vision is starting to clear! think i'll be okay! thanks for all the vibes and stuff in PM... guess it helped. no seeing eyedog for me! but i think i'll still be the dz drunk! So, I've been wearing contacts for about 15 years and never had a problem until last night... I had been doing laundry and cleaning all night. I went to pop my contacts out like I do EVERY night... and as soon as I made contact with my right eye, I thought I was going to die. Must have had bleach or some other checmical still on my fingers. I was instantly blinded and my eye was on fire! It swelled closed right away and I pryed it open and flushed it with cold water for about an hour till it seamed I had gotten most of the chemicals out. Once some of the bloodshot-ness went down, you could see that my eyeball was discolored... blue and greyish, like it was bruised. This morning, my vision is still very blurry in that eye. In fact, I really can't see much at all. My eye is very puffy/swollen. I'm going to the eye doctor after work. Anyone ever have anything like this happen to them??? Is this a normal reaction? Skyrose7 0 #2 May 11, 2004 I have had that happen, but where was the discoloration? on the white, right? I just kept on flushing it out. I hope that works for you.... Burns like a biotch, though, doesn't it?! Yeah... burns like a biotch is an understatement. That was excruciating!!! Like satan payed my eyeball a visit. The discoloration is on the white part of my eye. I couldn't see it... my sister described it to me. She said it looked horrible. No surprise by the way it feels. Michele 1 #5 May 11, 2004 WG, I did something similar... I was making Pico De Gallo once, exploring the "heat" of a serrano chili....decided it was way too hot for me, threw it out, and went on with my evening. Hours later, I went to pop my contacts, and it felt like God had sent a lightning bolt into my head. When I could finally open my eye, I noticed not just discoloration, but blood vessles burst...it scared me so bad I called my optometrist at 11 at night. His instructions were to ice, ice, ice, wash, wash, wash, ice....and cover it so I didn't get too much light into it. I was seen the next morning at 7ish, and was given some salve and some drops, cautioned against serrano chili, and sent on my way. It hurt like you wouldn't believe, but I was fine in a few days. My decision to get lasik had a bit to do with the chili episode.... Hope you're fine shortly! Keep washing it with cold compresses, and use ice to keep the swelling down and the pain under control. weegegirl 2 #6 May 11, 2004 Thanks, Michele! I needed to hear that! The discoloration had me concerned. I hate the doctors, hence I did not go last night. But I definately toyed with the idea. It's really freaky when something happens to something as delicate as your eyes and as important as your vision. I think I'll be okay. Just a bit nervous. peregrinerose 0 #11 May 11, 2004 You are waaay late on getting checked. Any base type chemical (detergent, bleach, etc) goes straight through the cornea and into the eye FAST. It needs to be looked at right away because the damage can be very severe. The blur is from the cornea swelling, when it swells, it becomes less transparent, almost opaque, so everything looks hazy. You can also have an iritis (the iris is essentially bruised and irritated) which makes things painful and light sensitive. Both the water and the chemical will cause superficial damage to the cornea which hurts like hell. Glad you are getting it checked, hopefully now you'll remember to wash your hands before going anywhere near your contact lenses and eyes. Throw out that contact lens as it has already absorbed whatever was on your hand. Jen OD, MS Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

skydiverbc 0 #13 May 11, 2004 my god girl, if it is too late, at least the doctor should be able to tell you what you can do from that point out to make it easier to adapt to

cocheese 0 #15 May 11, 2004 Sorry to hear about that Liz. Don't know if a doc can do much , but i bet they can tell ya if you will get better or not.Be careful driving to doc. Yes you should go if vision is gone.Keep wearing glasses for a while. Eat carrots.Drink water.Keep eye closed. My $.02 Let me know if you need anything or need a ride. I have had one eye in so much pain I couldn't drive. Not like driving with one contact.
Staso 0 #16 May 11, 2004 i managed to get some hydrofluoric acid in my eye many years ago. but it was really dilluted otherwise i woulnd't have an eye now. hydrofluoric acid is the one that eats pretty much everything, including glass and you wanna stay as far from it as possible :) i rinsed my eye like crazy and managed to keep my vision intact. hope you're ok. stan -- it's not about defying gravity; it's how hard you can abuse it. speed skydiving it is ... TheMonkey 0 #17 May 11, 2004 i'm not a doctor, but i did stay at a holiday inn express last night.... definitely get it check out, but my money is on that you will be fine in a couple days...i have been hit with pepper spray (wrong place at the wrong time with a super salty police officer) before with my contacts in....eyes swollen shut, my sight was screwed for about 4 days (red, bloodshot eyes that hurt like the dickens) and couldn't put contacts back in for a week or two, but in the end all's well that ends well and i was fine.... separate instance, i slept with the contacts in, woke up, rubbed the eyes and induced corneal abrasions on both eyes....my mom took me the hospital and they bandaged me with stuff and sent me on my way....so walking out of the hospital, i am holding my mom's arm and she walks me right into the door...i can hear all the people laughing in the background, and mom is hysterical she is laughing so hard....i was rather perturbed.... good luck with your peepers, monkey --------------------- Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience! peacefuljeffrey 0 #20 May 11, 2004 Do you really need another person to say, "Go get examined by an eye doctor?" Okay then: Go get examined by an eye doctor!" I have been fortunate enough to not have had any bad eye injuries, but a couple of scares. I made fresh salsa one night and I was cutting jalapeno peppers for it. Much later, I had washed my hands quite well, and I was taking out my contact lenses, and sure enough, some of that capsaicin shit was still on my fingers and whooo-eee! my eye stung something nasty! I also woke up one day to find I had an infected stye on my eyelid, which had swollen shut so bad that it looked like I'd been punched! I went to the doctor and he prescribed drops that countered the infection. Don't mess around -- see your doctor right away. Good luck. --Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... BlindBrick 0 #21 May 11, 2004 I won't be the upteenth zillion person to tell you to go to the doc; however as someone who's sporting two cornea transplants and therefore if intimately familiar with eye injuries, healing ect, let me give you some advice. Take it easy on your eyes for a for a few days. It's very easy to put further strain on the injury just trying to do regular everyday things. This in turn slows down the healing and ups the misery. Hope you get to feeling 110 soon. -Blind"If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
IMGR2 0 #22 May 11, 2004 I used to manage a welding company about 8 years ago and got ahold of a bad shield. I went blind for about 3 days and the pain was like needles in my eyes for a couple of those days. I feel your pain, don't want to go there again.
