I have had it with some people . . .

Hey, if the general consensus is that that wouldn't be a shitty thing to do, I will not hesitate to contact the DMV. I just considered that overstepping my bounds.

You have to follow what you think is right. Doesn't matter what a bunch of people that you have never meet or may never meet, thinks.

Me? If I knew someone that had a problem, and was not safe to drive, I would be standing down at the DMV's office in a heartbeat. I've seen way too many people either hurt or killed in car accidents.

So, I don't know what else to do, short of tipping off the DMV to check her medical records.

You could try the police. In a lot of places, the police have an obligation to protect the identity of tipsters who want to remain anonymous.

You could also try the media. "Epileptic driver causes 4 accidents, still has license". Of course, that could cause her huge amounts of public grief.

why would I call the DMV? I don't know her friend's name or driver license number.

He was kidding because your post is there twice.

d'oh.

these blank page loads are getting frustrating... I hit "post message" and then get a blank page, hit refresh, and then it posts twice! aargh.

You know, if that wouldn't be so horrible on her, I would call the news station around here. But I'm just gathering details on her latest wreck to send to the DMV.

I agree with you completely. My mom has had epilepsy since she was a kid. One day when I was about 4-5, we were driving down the road, her driving and me in the front seat. She had a seizure, hit a car. Everybody was fine, it was very minor, not even bruises and stuff, just a scare. But even just from that, she stopped driving BY CHOICE until just a few weeks ago, and it is now 7 months or so after having surgery to correct her epilepsy.

My new justification for doing this is that she wouldn't be the first person I reported for unsafe driving behavior. I've had to call the cops on two people who were driving in front of me and were either schizophrenic or on cocaine. Friend or no, people can't be out there driving around like that.

Hahahaha, if I did that, there'd be 20 new jails built specifically for old people looking under the steering wheel as they drive. :D:D

Wow

You are one seriously pissed off girl, however, I can understand.

I've grown up with a few friends that have epilepsy and neither drove and refuse to because they know the danger...

The flipside? One of them also never does a damn thing to reduce the amount of seizure activity, and as such, we've had some fairly interesting activity with her over the years.

I don't understand why they allow her to freaking drive. That is downright ignorant to her, and everyone else included...

You've a right to be pissed, go with it.

peace,

There are enough shitty drivers out there without epilepsy, just stupidity. Knowing there's someone who's got both on the road is just plain scary.

Seriously, call the police and or the DMV and ask them what the proper procedure is for getting her off the road. Try her insurance company too. If all else fails, seriously, have a sticker made, which says something like "Epileptic driver with no meds; proceed with caution"

Some people...

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

My friend works in workers' comp and actually knows how we can handle this, so trust me, it's in the works. I feel like a shitty friend, but I'm just gonna have to brush that aside. That's really not important right now.

By the way, LMAO at the very un-PC suggestions for bumper stickers. ;)

In 2 weeks, there'd be no one on the road in zhills (Gods Waiting Room). I came up behind a blue car with 4 little white heads going 20 mph. I thought someone was pulling a huge box of Q-tips. ;)

In Florida, you lose your drivers license for 1 year after a seizure. Like Ga, it is a widely disregarded law.

I have a friend who had a seizure due to a Wellbutrin od. The dr told her of the license thing. However, it was determined to be a med-induced seizure so they dropped it.

well the pertinent part of georgia law (40-5-22(c)(6))reads:

(c) The department shall not issue any driver's license to nor renew the driver's license of any person:

(6) Who the commissioner has good cause to believe would not, by reason of physical or mental disability, be able to operate a motor vehicle with safety upon the highway; or

____

I would suggest that if you sent a certified letter to the commissioner of public safety (Department of Motor Vehicle Safety - the licensing agency) notifying him of such an issue with this person, I imagine that it would be checked out... because no public official in his right mind would allow that kind of oversight to happen and risk the possibility of you being correct. I think he would cover his ass by at least checking it out.
______

also pertinent:

40-5-34. Driver License Advisory Board.

(a) The commissioner is authorized to appoint a Driver License Advisory Board.
(b) The Driver License Advisory Board shall advise the commissioner on medical criteria and vision standards relating to the licensing of drivers under this chapter.

(c) If the department has cause to believe that a licensed driver or applicant may not be physically or mentally qualified to be licensed, it may obtain the advice of the Driver License Advisory Board. The Driver License Advisory Board may formulate its advice from records and reports or may cause an examination and report to be made by one or more members of the Driver License Advisory Board or any other qualified person it may designate. The licensed driver or applicant may cause a written report to be forwarded to the Driver License Advisory Board by a person of his choice who is licensed under Chapter 30 of Title 43 and Article 2 of Chapter 34 of Title 43 to diagnose and treat disorders of humans. Such report shall be given due consideration by the Driver License Advisory Board.

(d) Members of the Driver License Advisory Board and other persons making examinations shall not be held liable for their opinions and recommendations presented pursuant to subsection (c) of this Code section.

(e) Reports received or made by the Driver License Advisory Board or its members for the purpose of assisting the department in determining whether a person is qualified to be licensed are for the confidential use of the Driver License Advisory Board or the department and may not be divulged to any person or used as evidence in any trial except that the reports may be admitted in proceedings under subsection (c) of Code Section 40-5-59 and Code Section 40-5-66, and any person conducting an examination pursuant to subsection (c) of this Code section may be compelled to testify concerning his observations and findings in such proceedings.

________________________

Send the certified letter to the Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicle Safety, with a copy to the Driver License Advisory Board. Note that you're a concerned citizen and that you think it's a matter of public health and welfare that this driver's medical situation be checked out. Also be prepared to be known as the accuser. That is to say, don't do this anonymously (not that you could send a certified letter anonymously). Good luck (for your own safety and the safety of others (including my family)). PM if you need contact names/addresses... I'm hooked in.

why hasn't the state revoked her license??????

Does anyone think that people who have their licenses revoked stop driving because of it?

They just drive more and hope that they don't get stopped.

I knew a guy who had such excessive speeding tickets that they suspended his license. He got caught again and they revoked his license. Eventually he got caught again and they charged him with "aggravated unlicensed operation" but that didn't stop him from driving. In fact, he drove right on through both the suspension and revocation periods. (Well, revocation is permanent.) He paid several THOUSAND dollars in fines, took the tests again (necessitated by revocation, which is the utter cancellation of the license as opposed to suspension, which temporarily takes it away). Now he's back on the road with a license, and although I don't think he drives like the idiot he used to, this shows me, at least, that license suspension and revocation are meaningless.

Down here in Florida, every week we read in the paper about some illegal immigrant killing someone in a traffic accident. No license -- not even in the country legally! These laws really don't stop anyone except the most honest people from driving -- but then the honest people usually are not people you even need stopped from driving.

Who cares about the general consensus? I never care what the general public will think when deciding to do soemthing. I only care how I think. If I believe it to be right then I do it, even if it is unpopular. Tell me her name and I will gladly call the police. Give me her insurance info and I will call them too.

Seriously, if you believe she is a danger to everyone out there, you must do what is necessary to get her off the road.

If she kills someone and you do nothing, you will never get over that, knowing you could have done something.

As far as overstepping your bounds, what if it is you or someone you really love that she kills? Will you feel that you were overstepping your bounds then?

Don't mean to be harsh but this is a no brainer to me.

Well, I'm going to write a letter to the appropriate person at the DMVS, but I just found out I'm on my own. My friend doesn't want to be a part of this, simply because she's her roommate and they have to live together, which I can certainly understand.

My oldest daughter had a viral realated seizure in January not long after she turned 15 and got her learners permit. She hasn't been allowed to drive since then until her recheck in June. I don't think it was reported but the dr told her no driving so the only stuff she has done has been on back country roads to work on her skills some.
