Losing my mind

Recommended Posts

Man, I am completely losing it! I had a huge stress attack last night, I haven't been sleeping enough and I feel like I can't get the fog out of my head.

I walked into work today and I have 43 active cases on my desk (I work for the Postal Ombudsman in Canada). A third of them are late, and this morning, I just froze. I've been staring at this pile of paper for the last two hours and I can't find the energy to do anything. My chest feels tight and I'm wound right up.

When I was losing it last night, my wife said I should maybe go jump this week-end, but I told her that in the physical and mental state I'm in, I would just be a risk to myself and to other jumpers.

The shitty part is that I have about two and half wees of holidays left, but we're going to South America at X-mas to see my wife's family and I have to keep the holidays for that.... All I want to do is step off the planet for a few days and get my head screwed on straight. NO calls, NO work, NO social outings. I think I'm about to call my Dr. and request bournout leave...

Any advice?

Marz

Even one day off really can make a huge difference; take care of stuff that's personally important, rather than important to someone else.

Or you could get a massage.

When the fog comes, if I force myself to exercise (when the fog comes, it takes forcing) it helps.

Or you can just open up the folder that's on top, and begin at the beginning. Remember -- you're human just like all the people who made cases that needed an Ombudsman.

Good luck

Take a break. Seriously!!
Been there myself a few years ago. Similar situation, kept going to the office. Then one eve, we were having diner at a neighbor's place, next thing I remember I woke up in the alley between the house and the ambulance parked at the curb.
My personnal advise is to disconnect from work rather soon. A few days, even a long weekend can help a great deal. Just take a day or two off, and try to relax, forgetting the rest of the world. Keep it simple, enjoy being with your wife and kids (if any) and forget about the rest.
That's what works for me.
Take care

dude, call in sick!

deep breaths. chamomile tea (it'll help you relax), no caffeine. get a massage or spend the day in bed with your wife.

to keep stress levels down, find a physical activity you enjoy that you can do for an hour or so after work. Yoga, aerobics, kickboxing, karate, something cardio. Working out helps you turn mental stress into physical stress, which is much easier to get rid of.

We need to start a support group.

I know exactly where you are, I was puking all night a few weeks ago because the stress was to much.

Go ahead and jump, while your head doesn't feel right at this moment once you are out at the DZ it will be different and you will forget about work even if it is just for a few minutes. Personally I hit the rock gym, and climb until my hands are dead and I can't raise my arms above my head. Then I'm to dead to do more than whimper that my hands and feet hurt.

Of course the 12 hr days I've been putting in lately haven't allowed me to do anything but sleep and work. Good thing Derek loves pizza because cooking has been at the bottom of my list of things I want to do.
Fly it like you stole it!
