Javelin J4 freebag

I recently bought a Javelin container. The size of the container is J4.5, which should take a 193 main. The previous owner however had a Smart 175 reserve in there. I noticed the free bag is labeled as a J4. Is this the normal size free bag for this container or was it because the owner had a smaller reserve in there?

Will the J4 free bag fit a PD optimum 218?

I have looked at the site, it is what brought about my question.

A Javelin J4.5k will take a 193 reserve.
A Javelin J4k will take a 176 reserve.

Although my container is a j4.5k and can take a 193 reserve the free bag is labeled j4, which indicates it is for a 176 reserve, which is the reserve size that was in the container.

My question is will the J4 free bag fit a 193 reserve (or PD opt 218).

Nothing on the container sizing chart indicates what the free bag sizing would be or which free bags go with which containers.

I am ordering a PD Opti 218 and want to make sure I don't need a new free bag. I am sure I don't but would rather not have to wait for one after receiving the reserve and finding out it doesn't fit.

First, forget thinking that every 175sq. ft resrve is the same volume or the same size. Different makes of reserves that state the same size have different pack volumes and differrent manufactureres measure the area of their reserves differently. And evern to like make and model reserves may differ in pack volume by 10%. So one '193' may fit and another identical '193' may not.

To know what may or may not fit get with an experienced rigger. And DON'T buy the absolute largest reserve that MAY fit in a container. It may NOT fit. You should pick the reserve you need/want and buy a container that it will comfortably fit in.

A Smart 175 quite likely needed a '193' container. They have relatively large volume for their size. Although if your referring to PD reserves they pack up big for their 'size' also. PD measures area differently and reports a smaller area than some/most other manufacturers for the same physical size reserve. A J-2 will hold a 181 square foot Raven.

The numbers you quote from the sunpath website are the SMALLEST reserve those sizes will hold. NOT the largest.

Don't order ANY individual components expecting them to fit together without consulting with YOUR rigger.

As to your specific question I'm not sure if they have different freebags for j4 and j4.5, I just don't remember right now. But I expect your PD optimum 218 will fit in the j4 bag. What I'm not sure off the top of my head is whether the j4 bag is the right bag for your container.
